Abstract of more lengthy obituary in the Kent News, Chestertown, MD., Saturday, February 15, 1896. Dr. Samuel Beck died suddenly at his home on Front St in Chestertown. His father was Horatio Beck who had served in the Legislature. His father's fine estate near Lankford, was now owned by Mr. George Beck. Dr. Beck received his education at Dickinson college and in medicine graduated at the University of Maryland. He was happily married to one of Kent's most gifted daughters, Miss Ellen Constable, Jan. 15, 1863. Coming home from the University, Dr. Beck established his medical practice in the building now occupied by his son. In 1861 his father purchased a tract of land for him at Hanesville, it being a part of the Hurlock "Hill Top" farm; upon this a comfortable dwelling was erected where Dr. Beck spent the next 18 years of his life. In 1879 Dr. Beck entered the political arena. He was twice elected clerk after hard fought campaigns. He served as chairman of the State Central Committee for the county for 4 years and also served as a member of the Board of Visitors of Washington College. Dr. Beck was a vestryman of the Episcopal Church. Dr. Beck was fifty-seven years of age last September. He leaves a widow and eight children, namely: Horatio W., of St. Louis; Wm. W., attorney, of Chestertown; Mrs. Allen A. Harris; Samuel, of Texas; Henry and Misses Mary, Sallie, and Isabelle. The funeral took place at the residence on Front street on Wednesday morning. The Rev. Dr. S. C. Roberts, in his most impressive way read the scriptural selections and the church service. A long line of carriages followed in the procession to the sacred old precincts of St. Paul's churchyard. The services at the grave were conducted by Dr. Roberts and Dr. Denroche. The pall bearers were: Richard W. Jones, R. Sterling Jones, George Beck, James L. Beck, Wm. S. Walker, Allen A. Harris.
