Probably buried in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa, Old Council Bluffs Cemetery. However, the exact location of his grave is unknown. There are no known photographs of William. We would love to find a photo if there is one. William Fletcher Ewell of the Mormon Battalion 1847 was one of the first Mormon pioneers to enter the Salt Lake City valley, and after doing so journeyed back to Winter Quarters Nebraska, where he reunited with his wife Mary Lee Bland Ewell, and their young family, and where he later died. Conquerors of the West, Stalwart Mormon Pioneers: William moved with his parents to Bedford County, Tennessee, for three years when William was just 14. Three years later they moved to Ray County, Missouri , where they settled down. Not long after their arrival, they met the missionaries and were all eventually baptized. William was a medical student on summer vacation when he met his wife. He was also doing missionary work during his vacation. She had been riding and was thrown off her horse. William found her and took her to her home. Her father welcomed him for a time but soon turned him out because he was preaching for the Mormon Church. Mary ran away, met William , and they were married. They raised some of their children in Ray County, Missouri , until the conflict between the Mormons and Missourians in 1838 . William served on grand juries, as Justice of the Peace, and was an overseer of roads in Shoal Creek . His name is listed as a member of the Missouri State Militia. Service was compulsory for men between the ages of 16 and 60. The part he played is unknown. By the end of 1838-9 , William 's parents had moved to Illinois, but William and Mary stayed in Missouri . In 1846 they joined with family members who were making their exodus from Nauvoo . William and his brother joined the Mormon Battalion. The record says he was five feet nine, with brown hair and blue eyes. He became ill and was mustered out after his year term. He and his brother tried to find their family in Salt Lake but when they weren't there, they traveled back to Council Bluffs . The hard winter there with his family caused a relapse of his illness and he died after making his wife promise to bring the children to the Valley. Mary later married Peter Jones , 25 October 1819 , and had two more children. Mary Lee Bland's grandparents are Sarah Caldwell"Sally" Lee (1775-1837) and Edmund Jennings Lee (1772-1843). Mary Lee Bland's parents were: Sarah Elizabeth Lee-(abt.1895-1879)and John Bland (abt. 1775-1841.) Children of William Fletcher Ewell and Mary Lee Bland.
