Death Due to Apoplexy The community was shocked on last Friday to learn of the sudden passing of Creighton's pioneer physician, Dr. W.H. Britt, which occurred at 3:50 a.m. while enroute to the Ray Stokes home south of Creighton on a professional call. He was being taken there by John Viterna, auto liveryman. The doctor seemed to be in good spirits and was jolly as usual, until the Berryman hill, which is located 2 and one half miles southwest of Creighton, was reached. After that time, the doctor said no more and , driving farther, Mr. Viterna thought he might have fallen asleep. Efforts to revive him proved to be of no avail, life having suddenly passed out. His untimely death was attributed to apoplexy. Dr. W.H. Britt was born near Glenwood, Iowa on January 12, 1863 and died at Creighton, Nebr. on November 1, 1929 at the age of 66 years, 9 months and 19 days. He was a native of Mills County, Iowa, where he attended the country school until he went to college in the fall of 1880. On March 4, 1884 he graduated from the medical department of Iowa University at Iowa City. Dr. Britt first came to Nebraska in September 1884 beginning the practice of medicine in Knox County at Bazile Mills, where he resided four years, anticipating the railroad's passing through the village and its development into a thriving town. When the railroad was pushed on toward Verdigre and it was certain that village of Bazile Mills was to be left to one side, Dr. Britt moved to Creighton in 1888 and had resided here for forty-five years, sustaining a large practice throughout the three adjoining counties. Dr. Britt was married at Bazile Mills on November 22, 1888 to Miss Martha A. Warner. This union was blessed with three children; Percy of Baltimore, Md.; Cladwell of Creighton and Miss Marcilene of Washington, D.C. Dr. Britt endured many hardships in the pioneer days in Nebraska. He has swam streams, has been lost at night on the prairies in storms, traveling in a circle as the lost often do and has also breasted blizzards in his professional calls to minister to his patients. He served as County Coroner for one term and was city physician for a number of years. He was also a member of the Board of Education of the Creighton public schools a great many years, holding the offices of Secretary and President of the Board. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge. Funeral services were held from the home on Monday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. W. DeBenham of Spencer. The enormous crowd present, many of whom had felt the touch of his ministering hand, was unable to get into the house and remained on the lawn. Rev. DeBenham spoke words of praise in his eulogy for this pioneer citizen. The remains were interred in the Greenwood cemetery. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, which attested to the esteem in which he was held by those in this community.
