McCoy Edith Elsie Thomas McCoy, seventh child of Erastus R. and Jerusha Stevenson Thomas, was born 4 July 1900, at her parent's homestead in Gosper County, Nebraska, and died on 17 September 1983, at Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Cambridge, Nebraska. She was baptized at the Methodist Church in the Gosper Community and attended Gosper school before moving with her parents to Arapahoe. Edith was married to Stacy B. McCoy on 23 January 1921. Born to this union were four children, Leila Ann, Stacy Leon, James Doran and Lucetta Elaine. She spent many years working at the Brewster Hospital in Holdredge and other nearby hospitals. Many hours were devoted to helping the sick and elderly in the Arapahoe community, a service for which she received the Ak-Sar-Ben Award. Edith was a fifty-year- plus member of the First United Methodist Church in Arapahoe, United Methodist Women and especially enjoyed its quilting group as long as her health permitted. She was a member of V.F.W. Auxilary, Country Extension Club and had been a member of the Sunny South Side Club for over fifty years. She especially enjoyed working in her yard and kept busy with quilts and handcrafts which she shared with her family. Happiness in her later years was contact with the grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, one brother, Lewis G. Thomas, and three sisters, Lavina Thomas, Nina A. Bratt, and R. Irene Bly. She leaves to mourn, her four children and their spouses: Lester and Leila Haussler, Arapahoe; Leon and Fran McCoy, Neligh; James D. "Jake" and Shirley McCoy, Arapahoe; Donald H. and Lucetta Andrews, Holbrook; sixteen grandchildren, twenty four greatgrandchildren; two brothers, Percy E. Thomas, Arapahoe and James Earl Thomas, El Cajon, California; three sisters, Anna C. Faw, Arapahoe, Ruth M. Thulin, Oxford, and Mary E. Forney, Cleveland, Texas; many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. A birthday card shower and reunion with her family were observed for her 83rd birthday. This was the highlight of her summer. Funeral services were conducted from First United Methodist Church, Arapahoe, Nebraska, on Monday, 19 September 1983, with Reverend Joseph B. Roe officiating. Music was by Dorothy Henry and Steve Henry with June Vannier as accompanist. Casketbearers were Lester L. Haussler, Dan Haussler, Dee Haussler, Terry McCoy, Michael Hall, James Wallace, Norman Andrews, Matt Andrews, Tom Andrews, Marc DeSciscio, Russel Olson and Keith Rexroth. Interment was at the Arapahoe Cemetery with Williamson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. For our claim to faith in the "sunshine" Is really no Faith At All, For when roads are smooth and days are bright Our need for God is so small, And no one discovers the fullness Or the greatness of God's love Unless they have walked in the "darkness" With only a Light from Above- For the faith to endure whatever comes Is born of sorrow and trials, And strengthened only by discipline And nurtured by self denials- So be not disheartened by troubles, For trials are the "building blocks" On which to erect a Fortress of Faith Secure on God's "ageless rocks."
