He had accompanied Howard and Mary Thomas to Mission in early December, planning to spend the winter there. Percy was born at the Thomas homestead in Gosper county on 19 April 1893, the son of E.R. "Ras" and Jerusha (Stevenson) Thoms. He attended school in Gosper county and Arapahoe prior to starting farming. on 27 December 1917, he was married to Ethel May Major at Smithfield, Nebraska. Mrs. Thomas died in 1952 after an extended illness. They had four sons and a daughter, three of whom are deceased: Leland E. WW II fatality in 1944, Grace E. Dunbar in 1960 and Dr. Walter I. in 1984. Surviving are two sons, Dr. Howard M. of Hayward, Wisconsin and Dr. Merle J. of Altoona, Pennsylvania. Also surviving are a brother and three sisters, J.Earl of El Cajon, California, Anna Faw of Arapahoe, Ruth Thulin of Oxford, Nebraska and Mary Forney of Cleveland, Texas. He was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters. Percy farmed in Gosper county and near Holbrook for many years and for a number of years after that was custodian at the Holbrook School and at Bethphage Mission in Axtell. He was active in soil conservation and progressive agrculture programs during all his farming years. He joined the Methodist church at an early age, was active in church work all his life and was proud of his fifty year membership he received in 1979. Percy was also active in the 100F and Rebekah Lodges, holding a number of local and state offices in the lodges. In more recent years, he belonged to the "Hills" and to the Patriarchs Millitant Divisions of the Odd Fellows. In addition to his surviving sons, he leaves to mourn his passing three daughters-in-law, 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. He will long be remembered and sadly missed. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday 22 January 1986 from the First United Methodist Church, Arapahoe, Nebraska with the Reverend Steven Todd officiating. Music was furnished by the Ladies Choir with June Vannier, organist. Casketbearers were Jake McCoy, Calvin Faw, Don Andrews, Jr, Lester Haussler, Al Bly and Norman Dunbar. Interment was in the Arapahoe Cemetery with the Williamson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. His funeral services were held at the Arapahoe First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Steven Todd officiating. A rousing rendition of one of the family's favorite songs, Amazing Grace, was sung and spam casserole was served in the church basement before everyone went to the Arapahoe Cemetery for the internment. Jake McCoy, Calvin Faw, Don Andrews Jr., Lester Haussler, Al Bly and Norman Dunbar were pallbearers, all are family members. Williamson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
