Raised on a farm, she attended Fairview High School in Alta and graduated in 1933. From 1933 to 1935 Edith attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She received a two year teaching degree, after which she taught elementary school from 1935 to 1938 in Crawfordsville and Union. Edith married Virgil Wittmer in 1937, having to borrow five dollars to pay the minister. Raised on a farm, she attended Fairview High School in Alta and graduated in 1933. From 1933 to 1935 Edith attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She received a two year teaching degree, after which she taught elementary school from 1935 to 1938 in Crawfordsville and Union. Edith married Virgil Wittmer in 1937, having to borrow five dollars to pay the minister. Working closely and diligently with her husband, they lived in various Iowa communities to succeed in the grocery business. Moving to Fairmont in 1956, Edith assisted as a bookkeeper at Wittmer's Super Value. She also served as a substitute elementary teacher in the Fairmont Schools, besides her most cherished jobs as mother and homemaker. Over her 49 years in Fairmont, Minn., Edith was active with various community groups and activities, including quilting, square dancing, PTA, and volunteering in the schools and hospital. She was especially active in the Methodist Church of Fairmont, Minn., including being president of the United Methodist Women. She was also a past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star. Edith always valued education, and she continued her own education by taking various courses through Mankato State University, nearly completing requirements for a bachelor's degree. A devoted mother and wife, Edith is survived by two daughters and two sons. Her daughter, Kay Witt, and her husband, Robert, live in Roseville, Minn. The youngest daughter, Mary Lou Wittmer, resides in New York City. Her son, Dennis Wittmer, and his wife, Donna Sasse Wittmer, live in Evergreen, Colo. Edith's youngest son, Virgil Wittmer, and his wife, Cynthia Beaulieu, live in Jacksonville, Fla. Edith is also survived by seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Because of her quiet, spiritual strength, she will be remembered by many as a loving listener and friend. She died in peace with her belief in Jesus, in whom she abided with and to whom she remained loyal.
