She was born September 29, 1896 in what is now Garden County. She grew up north of Lewellen and recelved her schooling in a country school. On February 28, 1916 she was untied in marriage to Van Delatour. Six children were born to this union. They were Kathleen, Dorothy, Sam, Eugene, Mildred and Joan. Newton Edmonia Mae Johnson was the youngest of nine children born to Fred Johnson and his wife Anna Lempke. She was born September 29, 1896 in what is now Garden County. She grew up north of Lewellen and recelved her schooling in a country school. On February 28, 1916 she was untied in marriage to Van Delatour. Six children were born to this union. They were Kathleen, Dorothy, Sam, Eugene, Mildred and Joan. Mr. Delatour passed away September 4, 1945. On May 17, 1947 she was united in marriage to Harry Newton. After he passed away on January 5, 1960 she continued to make her home in Lewellen. On February 1, 1980 her health failed and she became a resident of the Garden County Care Home in Lewellen. She passed away there April 3, 1981 at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 5 days. She was preceded in death by two sons and one daughter, five brothers and two sisters. She is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Kathleen Carlson, Mrs. Dorothy Leeper, and Mrs. Joan Brunt all of Lewellen; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Frances Delatour of Lewellen; one brother, Gordon Johnson of Oshkosh; 16 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, a host of other relatives and friends. She was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lewellen and was active there until her health failed. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, friend of everyone, and will be missed by all who knew her. Services for Mrs. Newton were held Monday, April 6, 1981 at 10:00 a m. from the Grace Lutheran Church in Lewellen with Rev. Robert L. Hoeft officiating. Music was by Linda Cheney. Honorary pallbearers were Jake Kats, Paul E. Temple, Earl Wilson, Vernon King, Earl Rogers, Ernest Fischer and Mack Boggs. Active pallbearers were Eugene Santero, Dean Armstrong, Marvin Grace, Johnny Podkonyak, Gerald Bond add Ted Fiesterman. Interment was in Ash Hollow at Lewellen with Holechek Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
