Description	:	Edward M. Jenkins, 88, of 390 Valley Road, area nursery owner, died at noon Thursday after a lingering illness at the Hutton Nursing Center, where he had been a patient one week. He was born in Winona May 5, 1889, the son of the late Joshua and Ella Jenkins. Jenkins, 88, of 390 Valley Road, area nursery owner, died at noon Thursday after a lingering illness at the Hutton Nursing Center, where he had been a patient one week. He was born in Winona May 5, 1889, the son of the late Joshua and Ella Jenkins. A lifelong area resident, he and his father opened the Jenkins Nursery of Winona in 1909, after he studied horticulture at Ohio State University. He continued to operate the business after his father's death in 1924 and his mother's death in 1936, and he and his wife were the operators until their retirement in 1954. The firm specialized in growing evergreens and ornamental shrubs. He was a member of the Ohio Nurserymen's Association, of which he was president in 1928. He was awarded an honorary membership in 1975, and he also was a member of the National Nurserymen's Association. He served on the board of trustees of the Farmers National Bank for over 30 years and he was on the board of the Northern Columbiana County Hospital Association, the Ohio Masonic Home Board at Springfield and the Grandview Cemetery Board. He was a member of the Sevakeen Country Club since 1932, serving as president in 1954, Butler Grange for over 60 years and Perry Lodge No. 185 R and AM for 50 years. A member of the Salem Chapter of the Eastern Star Chapter Council and Commandry he served as district deputy grand master of district 24 and he received 33rd degree honorary membership in the supreme council. He installed 283 lodges in Ohio and he held 19 honorary memberships in state lodges. A former member of the Winona United Methodist Church, he taught Sunday School classes there and he later became a member of the Damascus United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth M. Althouse, whom he married June 10, 1911 and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:00 p.m. at the Damascus United Methodist Church, where the body will lie in state from 11 a.m. to the time of the service. The Rev. William Buell, church pastor, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Herman Strawn of Damascus, a retired Methodist minister, and the Rev. Paul Brantingham of Martinsville, Va. Salem Perry Lodge and Salem City Lodge will hold Masonic services at 9 p.m. Sunday at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.mm.
