Pond, aged 55, died suddenly Saturday night about 11:45 at his home. Mr. Pond had just returned from Richmond, where, with his family, he had attended the dedication of the carillon and it was while returning home that night that he complained of feeling slightly sick. After reaching home his condition became worse and a physician was summoned, but medical attention proved futile, as he died within a short time after the doctor arrived. Mr. Pond's death came as a shock to his many friends not only in West Point but in the surrounding community. He moved to West Point about 13 years ago and since that time had been employed at the Chesapeake Corporation. His wonderful personality won him a vast number of friends and he was very popular among his fellow workers at the plant at which he was employed. He was a member of the West Point Methodist Church and also of the Cologne Lodge of the Fraternal Americans. Funeral services were conducted at the Shackleford Chapel with interment in the church yard. Rev. W. R. Reed, of the Methodist Church, officiated, being assisted by Rev. R. N. Hartness and Rev. Herbert R. Carlton. Many floral tributes were offered, which attested to the esteem in which he was held. Pallbearers were as follows: Wayland Pond, Leslie Pond, Joseph Pond, Barbour Pond, Charles Pond and J. H. Sutton. Surviving Mr. Pond are his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Sutton Pond; one son, Edwin, and four brothers, Leslie and Charles Pond, of Suffolk, Joseph Pond, of Wilson, N.C., and Wayland Pond, of Cordele, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Pope, of Philadelphia, and Mrs. A. L. Cox, of Marion, Va.
