Armstrong, 75, Hiawatha, a native of Atchison, who died yesterday at the Hiawatha hospital, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Presbyterian church in Hiawatha. Burial will be in National Cemetery in Fort Leavenworth. The Rev. Norman Phillips and the Rev. Don Evans of the Overland Park Presbyterian church will officiate at the services. Memorial contributions to the First Presbyterian church in Hiawatha are welcome. Dr. Armstrong was the eldest son of Thomas Payten and Estella Maud Draper Armstrong. He received his elementary education at District 5 and Shannon schools and was graduated from the College of Emporia May 29, 1923. He received the honorary doctor of divinity degree May 6, 1941. He attended Lane Seminary in Cincinnati, and was graduated May G, 1926. He completed in the graduate work and received the degree of bachelor of theology June 25,1929. On June 8, 1921, he and the former Alice Willmeth of Doniphan county were married. They were parents of three children, Mrs. Earl (Mary Naomi) Lear, deceased, Mrs. Richard E. (Ellen Marie) Cameron, Atchison, and Mrs. John E. (Ruth Alice) Sparling, jr. Temple City, Calif. Dr. Armstrong and Mrs. Julia Vavroch were married June 24, 1962. She survives at home, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Jack Ferbrache, Hiawatha, survive. He was ordained to the gospel ministry June 16, 1926, by the Presbytery of the Ozark, Synod of Missouri, Presbyterian Church USA. The ceremony was held at the Woodlawn Heights Presbyterian Church, Springfield, Missouri, at which time he was installed as pastor of the church. In 1926, he was installed as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church at Parsons where he served for 20 years, except for five years when he was chaplain during World War II. At the outbreak of World War I, Dr. Armstrong enlisted in the army and was assigned to Company K, 346th Infantry Regiment, 89th Division participating in the Saint Mihiel drive and the battle of the Argonne where he was gassed two days before the Armistice was signed. He has served as moderator of the Presbytery of the Ozark, Synod of Missouri, and moderator of the Presbytery of Neosho, Synod of Kansas, and moderator of the Synod of Kansas, Presbyterian Church USA. Dr. Armstrong also served on the Kansas Governor's Council of World Affairs and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the College of Emporia. He was a member of the Rotary club, Kiwanis club and belonged to the Masonic bodies. He also was a member of the American Legion and the Hiawatha Barracks. Because of his service in the two world wars and the Korean conflict, Dr. Armstrong received the following decorations and awards: Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, World War I Victory Medal,. American Defense Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Armed Forces Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Philippine Independence Ribbon.
