Read More	Elija Mathewson Is Dead; a Meat Market Operator Elija Mathewson, 78, a Hiawatha meat market proprietor for 39 years, was found dead in bed Friday morning, the date of his 52nd wedding anniversary. Mr. Mathewson, known as "Lige," who closed his shop 14 years ago, was known to hundreds because of his long period in business, Mr. Mathewson having conducted the meat market in the same place in the 700 block for the entire 39 years he was a meat man. Born July 20, 1857, on a farm near Savannah, Mo., he was married 52 years ago on April 10, to Elizabeth Massey, of Iowa Point, bringing his bride to Hiawatha a year after he opened his place of business. They established their residence on Shawnee street, but later moved to Kickapoo street. Only 2 months ago they moved back to the place they originally occupied, on Shawnee street. Death came so quietly that Mrs. Mathewson, an invalid, was sleeping beside him when their daughter, Miss Letitia Mathewson, discovered he was dead when she sought to wake him at 8 o'clock Friday morning. In addition to the widow, Mr. Mathewson is survived by 3 children, Miss Letitia, at home, James Mathewson, of Hiawatha, John Mathewson, of Westmoreland, Kans.; grandchildren, Mrs. Lowell Like, of Leavenworth, Rosemary-James Robert Dannenberg, Betty-Bobby Mathewson, Mary Lou Amann, of Hiawatha; Marjorie-Jack Mathewson, of Westmoreland; a great grandchild, Patricia Ann Like, of Leavenworth. 3 children are dead—Floyd Mathewson, Elizabeth Ammann, Mary Dannenberg. A brother, Rastus Mathewson, lives at Sparks. Mr. Mathewson was a member of the Baptist church, one of Hiawatha's most respected, useful citizens. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:30, from the home, at 713 Shawnee street, with Rev. James P. Blackledge in charge, burial in Hiawatha cemetery. —The Hiawatha Daily World (Hiawatha, KS) Fri Apr 10, 1936.
