Mrs. Elizabeth HEATON passed peacefully away last evening about 9:30 o'clock at her home on East Adams street after an illness of several months. Elizabeth Ellis HEATON was born in Zanesville, Ohio April 6, 1826 and was the daughter of Judge TELLIS and wife one of the brightest Lutheran ministers of his day. On August 5, 1846 she was united in marriage to Alfred Parker HEATON at Senecaville, Ohio. After a short residence to that city Mr. and Mrs HEATON came to Iowa and settled in Libertyville living there a short time they moved to Batavia and a little later to this city. Twelve children were born to them, five of whom are living to mourn the death of their mother. They are Mrs. J.J. GIBSON, Misses Elizabeth and Stella of this city; Charles L. of San Antonio Texas and Alfred of near this city. In December, 1876 Mr. HEATON passed away. Seven children have passed over the river of death and with the father have awaited their mother's coming. They are as follows: Silas, who died in Libertyville; Sarah, David, Harriett, Parkerson and Martha who died in this city and James, who died in Burlington. Two sisters, Mrs. Sarah THOMPSON of Long Beach, California and Mrs. Cathrine MCWILLIAMS of Columbus, Ohio and one brother, Perry TELLIS of Long Beach, California survive Mrs HEATON. Being the daughter of a Lutheran minister Mrs. HEATON was brought up in that faith and has since childhood lived a beautiful Christian life. Quiet and unassuming in manner Mrs. HEATON never cared for the social pleasures of life except as it helped to make her life more attractive to those of her home circle. She was devoted to her church and her home and was loyal to both throughout her entire life. Her children were devoted to her and her last hours on earth were quiet peaceful ones. No funeral arrangements have yet been made as relatives from a distance are expected." ----------- Transcriber note: This is a full verbatim transcription of the original obituary. The headstone that is in place for Elizabeth T HEATON in the public grounds section at Old Fairfield City Cemetery is engraved with the dates "1826-1902". However, it is clear from the publication of her obituary that she died in 1908. Perhaps the wrong date was submitted to the headstone engraver, or the engraver misread the 1908 date for 1902; in any event the headstone death date has not been corrected. The obituary also refers to her father's surname (her maiden name) as TELLIS.
