OBIT: Last Sunday evening, April 12, 1914, at five o'clock, Mrs. Elizabeth Jay, beloved wife of Lindsay W. Jay, passed away at her home in the north part of the city. She had been sick for many months. Her illness, which was very painful and distressing, was borne with much fortitude and patience. Mrs. Jay was a daughter of John and Sarah Zentmyer, and was born in Wayne County, Ohio, July 3, 1845. The family came to Iowa in the fall of that year. John Zentmyer, her father, was the first minister of the Church of God in this section. Her father's family comprised seven children. those living are Samuel and David Zentmyer, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, and Mesdames Catherine Pierce and Lydia Allender. The deceased are Mary Ann, Martha, and Elizabeth. In September, 1870, deceased and Mr. Lindsay W. Jay were joined in marriage. Five children were born to them. John Z. died at the age of six, and Mrs. Ora Smith, wife of Mr. William Smith, died a few years ago. The living are Joseph and Alvah Jay, Powder River, Wyoming and Mrs. Edith Smith, Mt. Pleasant. George Zentmyer, a nephew, who was taken into the home on the death of his mother when he was but two weeks old, may well be counted as a son. These with the husband and other relatives and friends remain to mourn. Mrs. Jay was an earnest and consecrated Christian woman. She was converted at Elm School house, near Merrimac, Iowa, at the age of fourteen, baptized by Elder F. F. Kinzer and united with the Church of God. In 1860, she united with the Methodist Protestant Church, Richwoods, where she remained a true member until her death. Her Christian life showed in all her daily activities and duties. Her neighbors could bear testimony to its genuineness. Funeral services, conducted by Pastor Frank Weston of the First Baptist Church, Mt. Pleasant, were held in Benjamin Chapel, Richwoods, on Tuesday at eleven o'clock. A large number of friends assembled. The singers were old friends of the departed. The text of the sermon was Rev. 1:7. Burial was in the beautiful cemetery adjoining the chapel.
