Description	:	Elliot was the son of Henry Graves and Elizabeth Ann Grills. He was one of seven children; five sons and two daughters. He united with the Methodist church early in life and for many years was a Sunday school superintendent. As a young man, he was for some time a teacher in the public schools. He united with the Methodist church early in life and for many years was a Sunday school superintendent. As a young man, he was for some time a teacher in the public schools. After his years spent in the classroom, he worked the rest of his life as a carpenter and millwright. Elliot married Alice Jackson Senter on 24 Jul 1845 in Roan County, Tennessee. Elliot and Alice had eleven children; seven sons and four daughters. Two of his sons died in childhood. Elliot's wife, Alice, died 18 May 1897. He first came to Iowa from Tennessee with his family in November 1854. They came by ox-team, traveling the 1000 miles in six weeks. They made their home near Elliot's brother-in-law, William McPherron, two or three miles north of where Tabor now stands. They lived here for two years before returning to Tennessee. When the Civil War broke out, Elliot owned and operated a large foundry in Kingston, the county seat of Roan County, Tennessee. Elliot did not support Tennessee's decision to secede from the Union. Because he supported the Union, the Rebels destroyed his foundry. He then moved to the country and engaged in farming, but his crops were destroyed by Confederate troops. Elliot enlisted in the Federal army and was blacksmith and wheelwright, shoeing the horses and mules, and keeping the artillery and munition trains in repair. He was taken prisoner, and only escaped by the intervention of relatives, who were themselves Confederates. Elliot and his family returned to Mills County, Iowa, in 1875. He farmed near Tabor, and moved to the town of Malvern about 1889. Elliot lived a healthy life until three years prior to his death.
