Son of Moses Horton Curtis and Sarah Ann Spence OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Thursday, August 5, 1915 ELLIS CURTIS With deep regret we note the death of one of Lucas county's most respected citizens, Mr. Ellis C. Curtis, which occurred at his home in Ottercreek township on Saturday morning, July 31st, 1915, after an extended illness. On Monday at 11 a.m., in the United Brethren church north of Norwood, occurred the funeral services which were conducted by Rev. Geo. Miller, of Des Moines. He chose as his text for the sermon, Job 14:14, "If a man die shall he live again?" after which Mrs. Worth Miller, of Norwood, sang a solo, "The Home of the Soul," a favorite song of the deceased. The church was crowded to its fullest capacity and many came who could not gain entrance, thus showing the high esteem which they had for their fellow man. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. The body was laid to rest in the Fletcher cemetery beside those of his three children, who preceded him to the better land. Ellis C. Curtis was born April 13th, 1876. His age was 39 years, 3 months and 18 days. He spent nearly all his life not far from the place of his birth, excepting a visit of several months with his family to California. He was married to Mrs. Minnie Lipe in April, 1902. To them were born four children, two of whom died in infancy, and one, little Lucille, when a little more than four years of age, leaving one child, Ruth Leota, together with his wife, five brothers and three sisters, many other kindred and many friends to mourn his early death. When sixteen years of age he became a Christian and united with the church. One year ago last January, in the revival meetings, he came to see spiritual matters in a new light and has manifested greater zeal ever since. On July 3rd, with his family, he went to the celebration at Bethel and had a hemorrhage of the lungs that night. He then went about for a few days, but rapidly declined, and the end came soon after midnight, July 31st. He made his will with remarkable thoughtfulness and care in providing for the welfare of his wife and daughter. He also remembered the church and cemetery, providing an annual income for them. During his affliction he manifested complete resignation to his lot, and a clear strong expectation of living on forever to tell the redemption story. The pastor, Rev. J. W.
