Son of Moses Horton Curtis and Sarah Ann Spence OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Thursday, November 15, 1917 WILLIAM NOAH CURTIS William Noah Curtis was born in Noble county, Ohio, on June 29th, 1851, and died at his home in Ottercreek township, Lucas county, Iowa, on Nov. 8, 1917, aged 66 years, 4 months and 9 days. When six years of age he came with his parents and two younger brothers to Iowa, arriving in Chariton in a wagon on April 27th, 1857, and settling on a farm immediately after in Ottercreek township. Almost all his life time has been spent on the farm near the old home place. In boyhood he proved to be apt in his school studies and attended a select school conducted by Prof. Perry in Chariton, and taught in the rural schools near home for many years and was very successful. He read and studied extensively and was well informed. He belonged to a large family circle of sixteen children, four of whom died in infancy and four after coming to manhood and womanhood. Four brothers and three sisters survive him. He was married to Mary Jane Marker on March 1st, 1874. To them were born three children, two daughters and one son. These are Mrs. Blanche Eubank, of Grand Junction, and Clark and Mae, all of whom were present during his sickness and death. All these and his wife and seven grandchildren, an adopted daughter and many other kindred and friends are left in bereavement. For more than a year he has been in frail health, and seemed to be conscious that the end was not far away. Last Monday he worked a good part of the day and on Thursday at 1 p.m. he crossed over the river with less than three days illness, when pneumonia had completed its awful work. He smiled when the chill of death was creeping over him, and fought his last battle above the clouds. His home circle today feels a sad loss and the community a large vacancy. He has left a beautiful home, but has gone to one that is better. He was conscientious and thorough, and was industrious and courageous. He has true life-long friends, even from childhood unto death. In the winter of '74-'75, Mr. Curtis and his wife were converted to Christ in a meeting conducted by Rev. Wm. Jacobs, at the Curtis school house and joined the United Brethren church and he died in that faith, and in the last part of his earthly life he gave evidence that he was prepared for the heavenly home. "Weeping may endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning." Funeral services, conducted by Elder John Garver, assisted Elder Richard Lambert, both of Lamoni, were held at the residence on Saturday, November 10th, in the presence of a large number of sympathizing friends.
