Description	:	Emily Elaine Lema - Obituary Emily Elaine Lema passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on the morning of September 16, 2009. A Native of Ferndale, Emily was born to John and Maria Martin on August 2nd, 1916, and was the second of seven children. Read More	Emily Elaine Lema - Obituary Emily Elaine Lema passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on the morning of September 16, 2009. A Native of Ferndale, Emily was born to John and Maria Martin on August 2nd, 1916, and was the second of seven children. Emily had a busy childhood growing up on the family ranch on Sage Road in Ferndale. She attended Grant Union Grammar School and after graduating went on to work at the Golden State Creamery. She met her husband Manuel at a local dance in 1936 and they married in 1937. Together they raised 3 children, Elsie, Larry and Jerry. Emily and Manual ran a dairy farm together for several years and later operated Lema's Grocery in Ferndale. Emily was very proud of her Portuguese Heritage and throughout her life was an active member of the UPPEC and SPRSI Lodges, as well as the Portuguese Association of the Eel River Valley. She spent many years participating in the Holy Ghost and Lady of Fatima Celebrations, and was proud to be the oldest living past queen for the Ferndale Holy Ghost Celebration. She was also an active member of Assumption Catholic Church. Gram's greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren. Gram's door was always open, and you could count on her sense of humor and honest advice to get you through just about anything. Gram loved to visit with just about anybody, and could often be found enjoying a cup of coffee and good conversation in the Tipple Motors office. She enjoyed the company of neighbors, friends, and relatives whenever she had the opportunity. Gram touched many lives and we encourage all who knew her to remember her words of advice; "Don't worry about the little things, just remember to count your blessings every day." Emily is survived by her daughter Elsie Wright and son Jerry Lema and wife Pam of Ferndale. She also leaves eight grandchildren; Lori Riddle and husband Tim of Fortuna, Randall Wright of Ferndale Chris Lema and Tom Lema and wife Mistie of Petaluma, Melissa, Rachele and Andrew Lema of Ferndale and Lynette Viegas of Corte Madera, as well as great-grandchildren Angelin, Kyle and Drew Riddle, Katelyn, Anthonie and Andrae Lema, and Rachel and Stephen Viegas. Emily is also survived by her brother Tony Martin and wife Marguerite as well as her sister Evelyn Giacomini, all of Fortuna, Brother-in-law Van Smith of Ferndale, her special friend and caregiver Stephanie Rose, and her husband and children Jim, Morgan, and McKenna, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Manuel Lema, her son Larry, parents John and Maria Martin, Sisters Mary Toste and Gertrude Smith, and Brothers John and Joseph Martin. We invite family and friends to join us in a celebration of Emily's life with recitation of the Rosary to be held at 7pm on Friday, September 18th, at Assumption Church in Ferndale, and a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday September 19th at 10am. Family prefers donations be made to the Portuguese Hall Association of the Eel River Valley (PO Box 254, Ferndale CA), The Ferndale Museum (PO Box 431, Ferndale CA), Ferndale Volunteer Fire Department (PO Box 485, Ferndale CA) or the donor's favorite charity. The Family would like to give special thanks to Hospice of Humboldt as well as Emily's friends and caregivers Norma, Kristina, Alex, Crystal, and Bethany, who made her so comfortable in her final weeks.
