Description	:	Gertrude Marie Smith died June 20, 1998, at her home at the age of 80. She was born Sept. 14, 1997. She was both a native and resident of Ferndale. She spent her entire life in the Ferndale area except for three years in Adak, Alabama with her husband Van A. Smith, while he was serving in the Navy. While there, she cooked at the Chief's Club. Read More	Gertrude Marie Smith died June 20, 1998, at her home at the age of 80. She was born Sept. 14, 1997. She was both a native and resident of Ferndale. She spent her entire life in the Ferndale area except for three years in Adak, Alabama with her husband Van A. Smith, while he was serving in the Navy. While there, she cooked at the Chief's Club. Gertrude love to cook and bake and was known for her Danish Christmas cookies. She loved to tend her flowers, especially her roses. She was a Life Member and Past President of the VWF Post #6353 Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband Van A. Smith, sons, John and Charlotte Michel, and Rich and Rose Michel; daughter, Phyllis and Bill Perkins; brother, Tony and Marguerite Martin; sisters, Emily Lema and Evelyn Giacomini; 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, John and Maria Mar tin; two husbands, Antone Michel and Dick Zwick; her son, Dirk Zwick; two brothers, John and Joe Martin; and sister, Mary Toste. Casket bearers will be John, Victor, Thomas, Tony, Allen, Greg and Clint Michel, Dan Perkins, Pat Whitchurch and Jeff Rueden. Honorary casket bearers will be Jerry and Larry Lema, Fred Martin, Mike, Cliff and Gary Giacomini, and Raymond Toste. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, June 25, 1998, at 10 A.M. at the Assumption Church, 546 Berding, Ferndale. A viewing will be held today from noon to 5 P.M. at Citizens Mortuary, 460 Ocean Ave., Ferndale. In addition, the recitation of the Rosary will be this evening at 7 PM, also at Citizens Mortuary. Interment will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Ferndale. Contributions may be made to the Diabetes or Kidney Foundation. Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of the Fern's Citizens Mortuary, Ferndale.
