Death was attributed to pneumonia. Mr. Matthew preceded his wife in death about 30 years ago. Mrs. Mathew, as a young woman, was a student at Olivette college in Michigan. She was 75 years old on her birthday last November and was both literary and artistic in taste. She always ahd been public spirited and was instrumental in organizing the dramatic club and other activities of the younger set. Her favorite pastime was the making of novelties, which she loved to distribute among her friends. In the past year she had begun making tin brooch pins and lavalieres for other members of the Entre-Nous, of which organization she was a member. Mrs. Mathew was a charter member both of the Entre-Nous and the Unity club, which were organized here about 30 and 40 years ago, respectively. Funeral services will be held from the Presbyterian church Saturday afternoon. Her son, R. H. Mathew, prominent attorney of Loup City, his wife and three sons are the only direct survivors. Mathew, pioneer Sherman county resident, died at the hospital last Thursday, February 6, following a week's serious illness. Mrs. Mathew had been in poor health for some time, and about a week prior to her death contracted a severe case of pneumonia, which, coupled with other complications and her advanced age, resulted in her death about 11 o'clock Thursday night. She was 75 years of age. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the Presbyterian church, in charge of Rev. Harwood, Miss Alice Brown played a special number on the piano. Burial was made in Evergreen cemetery. Emma L. Mathew was born November 29, 1859, at Charlotte, Michigan, the daughter of William Lewis and Angeline Clark. Her father, was a Lieutenant of the Union Forces of the Civil War, and lost his life while Mrs. Mathew was a child. Her mother later married a young veteran of the Civil War, William F. Jenkins, who after the was homesteaded a half section about two miles southwest of Arcadia Nebraska, which he developed into a well known fruit farm and nursery. Mrs. Mathew graduated from high school and attended Olivet College, at Olivet, Michigan. She moved to Arcadia with her mother where she met and married Henry M. Mathew, April 2, 1883, the ceremony being performed by George E. Senser, pastor of the M. E. church of St. Paul. Immediately after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Mathew resided on their farm south of Loup City which is known as the Oltjenbruns farm; and in 1888 moved to Loup City where Mr. Mathew became prominent in the practice of law. Mrs. Mathew has always been very active in public matters, being one of the charter members of the Unity Club of Loup City, and a member of the Entre Nous club.In the depression following 1894, the Knights of Pythias lodge of Loup City gave a number of home talent plays for the purpose of entertaining the people at a very small cost. Mrs. Mathew took part in a number of these and assisted in and coached others. For years, Mrs. Mathew coached high school and school plays. She enjoyed the companionship of young people, encouraged them to become better citizens, and has been a helpful influence to the community. In 1922, Mrs. Mathew was instrumental in organizing the Dramatic Club, which is well known for its many good deeds. Mrs. Mathew has written a number of articles and stories, some of which have been published in National periodicals. She was at her best when presiding at a banquet or giving a talk and was always willing to help others. She was a wonderful and devoted wife, mother and grand mother, and leaves to mourn, her son, Robert H. Mathew, her daughter-in-law, Elva Mathew, and her three grand children, Henry, Paul and Robert Mathew. The Sherman County Times - Feb 15 1935
