French, a Salinas resident for 43 years, died Wednesday, January 5, 2011, at the Katherine Healthcare Center where she resided for five years. She was 97. Born Erma Gamby on a farm in northeast Kansas, Mrs. French was reared in Kansas and earned a bachelor's degree in home economics from Kansas State University. She married George W. Born Erma Gamby on a farm in northeast Kansas, Mrs. French was reared in Kansas and earned a bachelor's degree in home economics from Kansas State University. She married George W. French of Augusta, Kansas in 1941. He predeceased her. She taught school in several states, including substitute teaching in the local Alisal and Spreckels districts. She attended the First Methodist Church and was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Salinas. Mrs. French was an active member of the American Association of University Women and was the Salinas chapter's Named Gift honoree in 1987. Many in south Salinas knew her for her daily early morning walks, which she continued into her 90s. She also participated in the "Human Race Monterey Bay" 10K walk/run for many years. Mrs. French is survived by her son, Alan M. French of Salinas; her daughter, Beverlee French of Kensington, and her brother, Dr. John W. Gamby of Slater, Missouri. A private family memorial will be held in Kansas.
