Description	:	Dr. John W. Gamby, D.V.M., 97, of Slater, died Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Big Bend Retreat in Slater. Funeral services will be Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church in Slater with Rev. Robert Sisney and Rev. Bruce Hess officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Slater Lions Club in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater. Born January 5, 1917 in Everest, Kansas, he was the son of the late George W. and Sadie Sliter Gamby. On June 18, 1943 in Hiawatha, he married Ruth M. Beckwith, and she preceded him in death on February 1, 1988. He is survived by a son, Dr. John E. (Jack) Gamby, D.V.M. and his wife, Glenda of Chadron, Nebraska; two daughters, Mary Kay White and her husband, Will of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Ruth Eileen Wundrack and her husband, Bruce of Liberty, Mo.; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a nephew, Alan French; and a niece, Beverlee French. He was preceded in death by a sister, Erma K. French. Dr. Gamby was a member of the First Christian Church in Everest, Kansas, and attended First Baptist Church in Slater. He was a 1934 graduate of Everest High School. He attended Highland Community College in Highland, Kansas. He graduated from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas with degrees in Veterinary Medicine and Accounting. He was a U.S. Army-Air Corp veteran of World War II and a life member of American Legion Post #78 in Slater, where he served as financial officer for many years. Following college, he briefly worked in Iowa before moving to Slater in 1950, helping Dr. William Johnson in his veterinary practice. He later established a partnership with Dr. Carl Wasson, and operated Slater Veterinary Service until his retirement in 1981. He served on the Slater Public School Board for 16 years. He was a longtime member and past-treasurer of the Slater Lions Club. He served as veterinarian for the Brunswick Sale Barn for 26 years. He was a member of the American Veterinarian Medical Association. He was a licensed pilot, and owned his own Cessna aircraft.
