He was associated with his father and brothers in Gowen's Guernsey Dairy on Route 1 in Chehalis for the past eleven years. He lived at Silver Creek for a number of years before coming to Chehalis, and while there, became a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Grange, in which he was a silver star member. Interment in Mountain View Cemetery. **************************** GOWEN BROTHERS OYSTER COMPANY, BUNKER CREEK, WASHINGON: *************************** A pile of oyster shell fragments and fond memories are all that remain of the cannery once operated at 398 Bunker Creek Road, west of Chehalis, owned by Dewey and Ernest Gowen. Grandchildren keep as memorabilia the remaining left over trade labels that read, "Gowen Brothers Oysters. Each week the Gowens purchased freshly harvested oysters from Bay Center in Washington and hauled them by truck to the Bunker Creek location, where the oysters where shucked and processed. The cannery was a family operation from approximately 1929 to 1939, putting to work all capable family members, including their father, Frances Marion Gowen. They would hire additional help as needed. They marketed their own product to grocery stores in South Bend, Centralia, and Chehalis. The cannery also processed vegetables and fruits, providing a custom service to individuals. Ernest Gowen died in 1937 and Dewey continued the processing another two years.
