It appears from census and other sources that his mother was about 15/16 years old when Eugene was born in 1865, but she is not recorded as having married until January 21, 1869 in Jefferson county, Iowa, to a Abraham Coburn/Coleman (his exact surname uncertain) and later, in 1874, to William H. Sappenfield, who in the 1880 U.S. Census is recorded as having Eugene in the family household as his 'adopted son'. Given all that, the circumstances of how his mother came to be... Sappenfield, who in the 1880 U.S. Census is recorded as having Eugene in the family household as his 'adopted son'. Given all that, the circumstances of how his mother came to be pregnant and given birth to Eugene, with the "Chadduck" surname, is unclear and may or may not be resolved much more than this information. Eugene was cremated and his ashes were buried on Dec. 24, 1938 in the plot in Evergreen cemetery next to his mother per cemetery records. He does not have a headstone or other inscription accorded him. ------------------------- Obituary (note: the obituary used "Chaddick" instead of "Chadduck" for the surname, in error): Fairfield Ledger Saturday July 30, 1938 Pg. 4 Col. 6 Eugene Chaddick, Former Resident, Dies at San Diego Word has been received of the death of Eugene Chaddick (sic), 73, former Fairfield resident, at the home of his sister, Mrs. S. L. Grimsley, at San Diego, Calif. He died suddenly of a heart attack Thursday evening. Mr. Chaddick (sic), who was raised here and belonged to the Odd Fellows lodge here, had been in the west about 15 years. Cremation will be at San Diego, and the ashes will be buried in Evergreen cemetery here, sometime later. He is survived by three sisters, two brothers, and his step-father, William Sappenfield.
