She was evidently often called "Lucy", so am using that for her nickname. She had come from a large family, per family group sheet information, but the names and DOB/DOD of her siblings can be found with different versions. One brother accounted for, though, was/is: Jacob Blakemore Chadduck (he is buried in Ottumwa Cemetery at Ottumwa, Iowa). ----------------------------------- Marriages/children: Lucy had one son, Eugene Arthur Chadduck, born in Iowa on Nov. 13, 1865, when she was about 15/16 years old. Who the father of Eugene was is not known to this contributor at this time. Lucy married a Abraham Coburn (or Coleman) on Jan. 21, 1869 in Jefferson county, Iowa (marriage lic. # 4200). What happened to their marriage and to him is not known at this time. They appear to have had perhaps three children during their time together from family group sheet sources. Lucy then married on April 2, 1874 in Jefferson county, Iowa, to William Henry Sappenfield. According to her obituary they had eight children. That listing, however, does not include the three infant children who are buried in Old Fairfield City cemetery. Obituaries in the early 1900's often omitted mentioning the deaths of infant or very young children, instead listing those who were at least teenagers, if not adults. As a result, the number counts of children born to a husband and wife may not equal those mentioned in obituaries. Any information about the whereabouts of the adult children listed in Lucy's obituary would be appreciated - a preliminary search of "Sappenfield" surnames and maiden names has not seemed to list any of these particular children as of July 3, 2013. It is certainly possible, if not probable, that at least some are buried in Iowa but do not currently have memorials. ---------- Fairfield Daily Journal Saturday April 28, 1917 Pg. 4 Col. 2 MRS. WM. SAPPENFIELD DIED LAST NIGHT Mrs. William H. Sappenfield, one of the highly respected women of this city, passed away last night at 6:30 o'clock at her home on West Kirkwood street, following a several weeks illness with acute indigestion. She has been in very poor health all winter suffering from a general breakdown which left her in such a weakened condition that she was unable to withstand her last illness. Lucy Chadduck was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, on November 9th, 1849, and for many years has made this city her home. On April 2nd, 1874, she was united in marriage in this city to William H. Sappenfield, who is left to mourn her loss. To this union were born eight (sic. see note above) children, who are as follows: Eugene Chadduck, Mrs. Margaret Buck, Mrs. Maud Motsinger and Wm. H., Jr., all of Fairfield; Fred, of Jamestown, N. Dakota; Mrs. S. L. Grimsley, Anna and Fern, of Davenport. She is also survived by one sister and two brothers: Mrs. Elizabeth Ramey, of Hillsboro; Jake Chadduck, of Ottumwa, and Frank Chadduck of Buchanan, N. Dakota. The funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at two o'clock from the late residence, and the remains will be interred in Evergreen cemetery. Many friends will extend their sympathy at this time in the death of a loving wife and mother.
