Memorials have been established to Jefferson County Historical Society Building Fund and to Mass stipends. Kaska was born May 30, 1906, in Jefferson County near Fairfield, the son of Vincent and Harriet Kurtz Kaska. He lived most of his life in the Fairfield community, graduating from Fairfield High School in 1923. He attended Chillicothe Business College in Missouri, moved to Chicago and worked for the railroad. He served as staff sergeant in the National Guard in the late 1920's and early 1930's, was employed at Louden Machinery Company for 17 years, at the Army Ordinance Plant in Burlington from 1944 to the early 1950's, and farmed from 1944 until moving to Fairfield in May 1966. He worked as assistant county assessor from 1960 until 1971. He married Beatrice Henry June 21, 1933, at St. Joseph Catholic Churh in East Pleasant Plain. He was the oldest baptized continuous member of St. Mary Catholic Church, a member of Knights of Columbus, Jefferson County Historical Society, Keep Young Club and charter member of Jefferson County Genealogy Society. He was well known as a musician, played violin and fiddle, gave violin lessons and repaired and made violins. Since retiring, he had made 24 violins and one cello. He gave one of his handmade violins to each of his children, grandchildren and to his godchild. He played at area nursing homes, care facilities and clubs and gave programs on how to make a violin. He organized the Golden Slippers musical group. Surviving are his wife; two sons, James of Kirkland, Wash., E. William of Newton; two daughters, Marie Romitti of Madrid, Iowa, Shirley Rossa of Madison, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond of Las Vegas, Nev., and Earl of Cedar Rapids. Two sisters, Gertrude and Bertha, two brothers, Harold and Maurice, and a grandson preceded him in death.
