This contributor examined the original death reports of this time period on August 4, 2009 to try and learn more about Evalyn Stanford. What was not expected to find was that the death records for 1885 are very clearly written out that call into question the headstone date: To wit- the death record (#637) is written for "Evalyne Stanford", born "Plattsmouth, NE". The record report was filed at the Jefferson County courthouse on November 20, 1885 (as were many other records, evidently a cumulative listing covering several months) that very clearly states the date of death as being "Feby 28, 1885". She died of a fever in an illness that lasted some eight days. Also, her age at death was given as 19y 9m 10d. So, where does the headstone date of October 5, 1884 come from? For now, this contributor will use the engraved name and headstone date with strong reservations since the legal DOD in February 28, 1885. More research needs to be done to determine the nature of these discrepencies. --------- This contributor had been independently researching the Bradshaw/Stanford families here in Jefferson County, Iowa in July and had seen a family data sheet at the Fairfield Public Library indicating that Abraham Lincoln Stanford had been married three times, mentioning "Evalyn". The discovery that she was buried at Friends Cemetery in Pleasant Plain was a fluke of seeing her name in the cemetery transcription list available for this cemetery and making the connection. Such is the way that family histories are linked together!
