From Sheridan’s Daybreak, Volume I, pages 382-383 BEN N. and EVELYN BENSON In November of 1917, Ben N. Benson came by train from Sheyenne, North Dakota to Glasgow, Montana with O. Oftedahl, who had land near Poplar. While there he found out through the land office at Glasgow that a couple of parties who had filed on land east of Medicine Lake had decided not to go through with it, and gave Benson the description of this land. Ben came to Medicine Lake, and found out from the Real Estate agent that a relinquishment closer to town could be bought on a quarter of land four miles east and one mile south of Medicine Lake. This he bought for $1200, and went to Glasgow to file on this land. Then on April 8, 1918 he came by freight with a carload of five horses, one cow, farm machinery, a buggy, etc. A sixteen foot Army tent served as his home until he bought a 14 x 18 foot shack with rooms added later. Bill neighbor, broke twenty acres on this quarter which Ben seeded into flax. Ben seeded 100 acres for Wachter in exchange for breaking. January 29, 1919 at 11 a.m. Ben N. Benson was married to Evelyn Aason by the Rev. 0. Hungness at the Lutheran parsonage at Sheyenne, North Dakota. The wedding had been set for January 8 and to be held at a country home, but due to the flu epidemic, several members at this home had the flu, including the bride-to-be. The wedding day had to be postponed and place changed to the parsonage. They came to Medicine Lake in the middle of February to live on their homestead. Farming was done by horse power and tractor. In the fall of 1922, the Bensons rented their farm for one year to Mr. and Mrs. Adelor Plaisance and left by train for Bonners Ferry, Idaho where they spent three weeks. Then they went on to Spokane, Washington for six weeks. While in Spokane, they bought an old Model T Ford and did some repair work on it; so they had something to travel around with to see different country. On to Tacoma, Washington where Benworked for Beal & Sons, contractors in carpentry. Before leaving for home, he bought a small tent for camping purposes and returned to Medicine Lake late in July of 1923. That fall he worked for J. W. Mickelson in threshing, running the engine. In the fall of 1924 one night the dog kept barking and woke them up. They found out that the barn and hay shed were on fire. Two cars were in the shed which burned. The fire was caused from combustion of oat bundles in the shed. Hay stacks nearby were saved by carrying buckets of water from the water tank. Benson served as State Representative one session 1927-28 in the Montana State Legislature. He served six years as a member on the Medicine Lake school board, and one term on the Town Council. He was foreman, as carpenter, on W.P.A. five years, 1937-42 at the CCC Camp 4750 Foreman in Carpentry. Part of this period, Bensons lived in Medicine Lake. They moved back to the farm in 1942, but due to Ben's arthritic condition, doctors recommended it was best to quit working. Bensons had a sale on May 17, 1943, of farm machinery and stock having rented their farms to Alfred Petersen. After the sale they moved back to Medicine Lake where they have lived except for two winters spent in Arizona and a few extra trips. Traveling has been one of their highlights. Mr. and Mrs. Ben N. Benson are members of the Medicine Lake Congregational Church. Several students and teachers have stayed at Benson's home in town and youngsters have spent summers on their farm. Connected with these are many fond memories through the years. Mr. and Mrs. Ben N. Benson were honored on their silver anniversary in 1944 and on their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1969.
