Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 1 at the St. Lawrence Community Church. Burial will be at the St. Lawrence Cemetery. Evelyn was born February 28, 1927 at St. Lawrence the daughter of James Austin Aaron Carter and Maude Novella (Key) Carter. She attended St. Lawrence Schools until graduating in 1945, and then attended Aberdeen Normal School where she earned her teaching certificate. Evelyn first taught at Sunrise School, a country school north of St. Lawrence. It was while on leave from military service in November 1947 that her childhood sweetheart, Fred Fanning, proposed marriage. Evelyn married Fred Fanning at the parsonage in St. Lawrence on December 30, 1947 and to this union six children were born. The couple spent a short time living in Sioux City, Iowa, where Fred worked at Robar Pest Control Company and their first child, Denny, was born before returning to St. Lawrence where the rest of their children were born and raised. While Fred worked to support the growing family, Evelyn had equal responsibilities at home raising the children. The couple lived in St. Lawrence for a time having bought land and a house from Eva Fritts. Later, they lived on the farm of Fred's parents, Margaret and Clyde Fanning, before moving to a farm north of St. Lawrence, and then to the farm 10 miles southeast of St. Lawrence in Pearl Township where their son John and family live today. For a time, Evelyn was a correspondent for the Huron Daily Plainsman. At one point she even drove a Volkswagen microbus on a small route for the St. Lawrence School while Fred drove another bus route. Once their children were school age, Evelyn began working in the area public schools first in St. Lawrence, and then for Miller School District beginning at Ohio School, a country school south of Miller, and then in town at the Miller Public Schools. She spent many years devoted to education. However, what Evelyn loved most was being with Fred. As long as he was by her side, Evelyn was happy to do anything. She enjoyed traveling to Arizona, Washington, Minnesota, and Florida, cherishing her time with family and friends. A few years ago, Evelyn and Fred moved into St. Lawrence town where they happily lived together. Evelyn lived her entire life in the St. Lawrence Community, and was a life-long member of the St. Lawrence Community Church. Music held a special place in her heart. When younger, she often sang for various occasions in women's duet and quartet groups, and the church choir. She is survived by three sons, Denny (Suzette) of Elk Point, Fred (Faris Hattab) of Seattle, WA, and John (Kim) Fanning of St. Lawrence; two daughters, Ruby Fanning (Dennis Aldinger) and Jane (Larry) Russell, both of Rapid City; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchild; and eight siblings, Leone Liebers of Ladysmith, WI; Dorothy Marshall of Miller; Lois Harris of Jonesville, NC; Jimmie Carter of Venice, FL; Rachel Rediger of Mesa, AZ; Roger (Aloa) Carter of McLeansville, NC; Dixie (Al) Young, Edmonds, WA; and Dale (Suzanne) Carter of Montrose, CO.
