Maude Key was born November 28, 1896, at State Road, Surry County, North Carolina, to Millard Chafin and Phebe Ann (Chipman) Key. Phebe died in 1905, while Maude was just a young school girl. Her father then married Sarah Elizabeth Walters on December 24, 1905. Maude Key married James Austin Aaron Carter of State Road, Wilkes County, North Carolina on July 15, 1917. James Henry Carter and Bessie Levaria Tucker were his parents. Maude Novella and James Carter traveled by train to South Dakota in 1918, with James journeying first to plan for Maude's arrival. They settled in Hand County to stay in 1920, working farm jobs, owning a Case farm machinery and Pontiac car dealership, and an automobile service station. For 30 years the couple worked at these jobs, adding a restaurant to their service station for the last ten of those years. James last worked as a road maintenance operator for Hand County, South Dakota. Until the last year of her life, Maude continued to live in her St. Lawrence home. She was a long-time member of St. Lawrence Community Church, religion being an important part of her life. She also belonged to the St. Lawrence Legion Auxiliary for many years. Maude crocheted, knitted, gardened, canned produce and baked delicious pastries. Annually, she exhibited her crochet work at the South Dakota State Fair. Travel brought her much joy. Winters were often spent in California and Arizona with several of her children. Cherished were return visits to her birth place in North Carolina, where many family and friends still live. She is survived by six daughters, Leone Liebers of Winter, Wis., Dorothy (Francis) Marshall of St. Lawrence, Lois (E.L.) Harris of Jonesville, N.C., Evelyn (Fred) Fanning of St. Lawrence, Rachel (Clyde) Rediger of Mesa, Ariz., Dixie (Al) Young of Edmonds, Wash.; three sons, James of Rapid City, Roger (Aloa) of Greensboro, N.C., and Dale (Suzane) of Montrose, Colo.; and at last count, 250 descendants. She was preceded in death by her husband, James A.; parents, Millard and Phebe; stepmother, Sarah Elizabeth Walters Key; two daughters, Vi Webber and Virginia; three sisters, Eva Shorter, Carrie Caudle and Ettie Jane Key; two brothers, Carl and Thomas; one stepsister, Bertie Windsor; and four stepbrothers, Autie, Marvin, Clyde and Millard.
