Henry Carter at State Road, North Carolina. He served in the Armed Forces during World War I. He was married July 15, 1917, in Surry County, North Carolina, to Maude N. Key of Elkin, North Carolina. In November of 1917, he moved to Yale, South Dakota and in the spring of 1918 he moved to Hand County where he had his own implement business until 1959 when he retired. He was employed with the South Dakota State Highway Department at the time of his death. He leaves to mourn his passing his widow, Maude, St. Lawrence; seven daughters: Leone Karge, Wells, Minnesota; Dorothy Marshall, St. Lawrence; Viola Lanz, Chamberlain; Lois Harris, Jonesville, North Carolina; Evelyn Fanning, St. Lawrence; Rachel Rediger, Spokane, Washington; Dixie Young, Edmonds, Washington; and three sons: James, Jr. St. Lawrence; Roger, Greensboro, North Carolina; Dale, Los Angeles, California; 33 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister; and three brothers.
