Evelyn Laverne Hale Gilbreath was born to Edgar Emins Hale and Clara Harriet Arnold Hale on October 1, 1921 at the Hale farm in the Divide Center area. She passed away on June 1, 1987, at Oakland Memorial Hospital at the age of 65 years and eight months. Evelyn spent her childhood on the farm attending the Divide Center School. She graduated from Lyons High School in 1938. After high school she attended business school and was employed by the First National Bank in Omaha for nine years. She married Donald Gilbreath on November 7, 1946 in Omaha. They moved to the Lyons area in 1961. To this union, four children were born: Ed, Bill, Karen and Jerry. As a den mother, Sunday School teacher and baby sitter, she devoted countless hours of love to numerous children. She served her church and community in many ways, most notably as a choir member and ambulette. She cherished her friends and marveled at their compassion and thoughtfulness, especially during the past few years. Her greatest joy was her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don; her parents; three brothers and two sisters. She is survived by sons, Ed, his wife Sally, and their three children; Bill, his wife, Pat, and their four children of Axtell; Jerry, his wife, Karen and their three children of Axtell; one daughter, Karen and her husband, Jim Vlach and their two children of Lyons. She is survived by a brother Floyd Hale and sister-in-law, Margaret; sisters, Hazel Christensen and brother-in-law Paul, Orpha Bowling, Ruth Brandt and brother-in-law Melvin; nieces and nephew and a host of friends.
