"Phil" Schoonover, 93, of Fort Benton, an Army veteran and retired postmaster, died of natural causes Sunday at a Fort Benton hospital. Survivors include his three children; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. . Felix was born June 3, 1917, in Fort Benton, Mont., to Paul and Nettie Schoonover. He was raised and educated in Fort Benton, and graduated from Fort Benton High School in 1936. He then went on to work in Yellowstone Park and Jardine Mining Co. He married Katie Strnot on Jan. 16, 1941. He entered the Army in 1942, and was assigned to the Army Reserves to work in the mines at Butte, Mont., from November 1942 to June 1945. He then returned to active duty, stationed at Fort Missoula, Mont., and was then released from the Army in August 1946. Felix returned to Fort Benton and worked as a bartender at the Pastime and Palace Bar. In 1948, he worked as a clerk for the Post Office Department and became postmaster in 1962, retiring in 1977, with a combined 31 years of government service. He was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge and the Elks Lodge, and was a 15-year member of Kiwanis. He served on the city fire department and city county planning board, was a charter member of the Rifle Club, president of the National League of Postmasters for two years, was regional coordinator for the National League of Postmasters for the Western Region, served as Red Cross chairman for five years and was a member of the Fort Benton American Legion. Felix enjoyed retirement and spending winters in Boulder City, Nev., hunting, reading, golfing, and playing pool and pinochle. He was preceded in death by his wife Katherine in January 2007; sisters Dixie, Natalie and Carol; his brother, Francis; and his parents.
