Burial was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Victor. Frances Josephine McClellan, the daughter of James S. and Eleanor Josephine Faurote McClellan, was born in Victor, Iowa on July 6, 1880, and passed away Tuesday evening, Feb. 21, 1961 in the Goeke Nursing Home at Montezuma, Iowa, having attained the age of 80 years, 7 months, and 15 days. The deceased grew up in Victor after having spent a few years of her childhood in Carnforth, attended the public schools in Victor and graduated from the Victor High School in 1896. Too young to enter teaching at the time, she served as a waitress in the Houston House, managed by a friend of the family, Mrs. Clara Gilbert, and later at the Harper House. At the age of 17, she moved with her family to Carnforth. Always interested in public speaking, she often assisted in school programs and lycoum courses, and for many years served on the program of the annual alumni banquets of Victor High School. On Mar. 21, 1900 she was united in marriage to Clyde R. Manatt of Carnforth at the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Rice at Stanwood, Iowa, with the Rev. C. K. Hudson, Methodist pastor, officiating. One daughter, Gwendolyn, now Mrs. Willis Ryan, was born to this union. The couple made their home for a time in Carnforth and engaged for some years in the restaurant business at Stanwood, Brooklyn, and Cascade. Following the death of her sister, Mrs. J. R. Manatt, in November, 1911, Mr. and Mrs. Manatt sold the restaurant business, moved to the country, and made ahome for the seven nephews and one niece, who grew to love them as their parents. In 1923 they came to Victor to operate the Downs restaurant while the owners were visiting relatives in California, and in 1927 they bought the house which was their home until Easter Sunday of last year, 1960, when both were taken to the Marengo hospital. Her husband, Clyde, passed away in Marengo, May 2, 1960, and shortly afterward Mrs. Manatt took up her residence at Montezuma in the Goeke Nursing Home, where she received the best of care for those last several months of her earthly life, until her death on Tuesday of last week. She is survived by her daughter, Gwendolyn, Mrs. Willis Ryan of Brooklyn; a grandson, Billy Ryan of Ames; a granddaughter, Sharon Ryan of Arizona; the son-in-law, Willis Ryan; one brother, Ben McClellan of Victor; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two sisters. Always interested in public affairs and possessing rare talent for speaking, Mrs. Manatt was active along many lines of work. In the summer of 19156 she served as reader and impersonator with the Jones Chautauqua System of Perry, Iowa, and even in recent years, while under severe physical handicaps, was often called on in church and social groups for dramatic readings and original poetry, a realm in which she excelled and delighted. The church and its interests were always near her heart. At the early age of ten years she accepted Christ as Saviour and joined the Methodist church, remaining a consistent Methodist ever since though always gladly working in other churches in places where there was no one of her own denomination. A faithful attendant at services while she was physical able, she was a loyal member of the Women's Society of Christian Service and of the Sunday School. She also held very active membership in the local Order of Eastern Star and in the Victor Women's Club. In the Providence of God, Mr. and Mrs. Manatt had the rare privilege and pleasure of observing their 60th wedding anniversary on March 21, 1960 at their home here in Victor. From The Victor Alumnus 1879 - 1929 Fannie McClelland, now Mrs. Clyde Manatt of Victor, also has a daughter who has spent several years in the school room as a teacher.
