Their Mennonite ancestors had been invited by Catherine the Great to Russia, to farm the land there and make it economically stronger. Catherine the Great had promised them religious freedom, along with German Lutheran farmers and German Jewish shopkeepers, but by the 1880's it began to be clear that the religious freedom in Russia wouldn't last, and many Mennonites came to Nebraska and Kansas to settle here. Their Mennonite ancestors had been invited by Catherine the Great to Russia, to farm the land there and make it economically stronger. Catherine the Great had promised them religious freedom, along with German Lutheran farmers and German Jewish shopkeepers, but by the 1880's it began to be clear that the religious freedom in Russia wouldn't last, and many Mennonites came to Nebraska and Kansas to settle here. The Lutherans and Jews stayed longer, until the terrible pogroms of Lenin and Stalin forced them to seek shelter. In the 1920's the Beatrice Mennonite Church sponsored the Joshua Wiebe family to come to Nebraska, and they barely got out of Russia alive. In 1930, Frank was living with his Uncle Frank and Aunt Marie Albrecht, who lived near Blakely, in Gage County, Nebraska. Uncle Frank was a minister, but the family were also farmers, and with three girls they welcomed stalwart 21-year old Frank to help on the farm. The 1930 US Census shows Frank Albrecht, 54, b. Russia, imm. 1884, minister Marie Albrecht, 48, b. Russia, imm. 1894, wife Margret Albrecht, 19, b. NE, dau., farm laborer Dora H. Albrecht, 16, b. NE, dau Helen Ruth Albrecht, 11, b. NE, dau. Frank G. Jantzen, 21, nephew, farm laborer But by 1935, Frank was back with his own family, who were farming near Plymouth, in Jefferson County, NE. The 1940 US Census shows the family living on the same place as they did in 1935, and David Jantzen, 64, head, b. Russia, farmer Helene Jantzen, 61, wife, b. Russia Gustava Jantzen, 34, daughter, b. Nebraska Henry Jantzen, 33, son, b. Nebraska, farm laborer Frank Jantzen, 31, son, b. Nebraska, farm laborer David W. Jantzen, 30, son, b. Nebraska, farm laborer Helen Jantzen, 30, daughter, b. Nebraska Pertwye Jantzen, 28, daughter, b. Nebraska Frank and the rest of his family had achieved an 8th grade education, but the new ways of the United States were making effect: Frank's younger sister, Pertwye, had gone to 1st year High School. Frank married Gertrude C. Claassen, and the family were blessed with two sons, Gordon Eugene and John D.
