There will be a wake service at the church 7 p.m. Friday with visitation beginning at 4 p.m. Frank Joseph Hoven was born June 2, 1917, to Matt and Mary (Pickart) Hoven at rural Hoven, one of 16 children. Frank was raised on the family farm east of Hoven and attended St. Anthony's School in Hoven. He worked on the family farm until the age of 21. Then he moved to Madison Lake, Minn., and worked on the Ernie Frederick farm for three years. When WWII broke out, Frank was proud to serve his country in the navy, and enlisted in October 1941. Frank was on a ship in the Pacific when Pearl Harbor was bombed. They headed straight for Pearl Harbor, arriving to find the ships still burning. He served for four years. On Oct. 16, 1946, he was united in marriage to Viola Huber at Hoven. To this union 10 children were born. He farmed in the Hoven and Tolstoy areas until 1982, at which time he moved into Hoven. He continued to help on the farm as needed. At age 70 he began helping his daughter Suzi at the hog-buying station in Lebanon. He was an active member of the Blue Blanket Valley Senior Citizens Center, serving as board member, president, and bus driver. A big part of his life was the John J. Peters American Legion Post, faithfully serving in many offices, including commander several times. He was a member of the Spirited 76 and volunteered many hours helping with the restoration of the Cathedral of the Prairies. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion, Catholic Aid Association and the Hoven Service Club. Frank enjoyed dancing, playing cards, fishing, and his early morning coffee friends. He is survived by his wife Viola of Hoven, S.D.; four sons and six daughters, Ernie (Carol) Hoven, Hoven, S.D., Joyce (Dwight) Bussmus, Hot Springs, S.D., Bev (Danny) Thomas, Gettysburg, S.D., Suzi Vail, Lebanon, S.D., Nadine (Dave) Holmoe, Sioux Falls, S.D., Mary (Bob) Emgarten, Spirit Lake, Iowa, Matt Hoven, Battle Ground, Wash., Al (Cindy) Hoven, Battle Ground, Wash., Joe Hoven, Tolstoy, S.D., and Mercedes (Rick) Bollinger, Vancouver, Wash.; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Clem, Tuscon, Ariz.; and three sisters, Marie Fackelman, Tucson, Ariz., Frances Lange, Mankato, Minn., and Lenora Kaiser, Mankato, Minn. He is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and six sisters, Agnes Fowler, Arthur, Walter, Marcella Busch, Margaret McGrath, LaVera Abler, Elmer, Helen Jennings, Matthew, Dorothy Cline, and Leonard; one son-in-law, Charles Vail. Casketbearers will be Wesley Hoven, Webster, S.D., Clayton Hoven, Bowdle, S.D., Dan Hageman, Hoven, S.D., Randy Beard, Fort Collins, Colo., Luke Holmoe, Sioux Falls, S.D., Mike Emgarten, Spirit Lake, Iowa.
