He was born on Feb. 14, 1927, in Dubuque, son of Joseph and Teresa (Wertin) McGovern. He received his education in the Peosta area schools. He served in the Army from 1950 to 1952 and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal. He was united in marriage to Virginia Schwendinger on Feb. 14, 1953, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Peosta. He farmed his whole life, first working for his dad on the family farm and eventually purchasing the farm in 1961. He drove a school bus for the Western Dubuque School District for many years. After his retirement from farming in 1981, he delivered meals to shut-ins for the Meals on Wheels Program in Dubuque. He enjoyed golf and bowling, and was a member of the 700 Club, but his favorite pastime was anything involving baseball, whether playing a game himself, listening to the Cubs games on the radio, watching them on television or going to a game. During his younger years, he was a left-handed hitting first baseman for Peosta who had a batting average that consistently hovered around the .350 mark. He led Peosta to league championships in 1949, 1950 and 1953. He was honored in 1997 by being inducted into the Dubuque County Baseball Hall of Fame Association. He was a Hawkeyes fan and an avid Cubs fan who never stopped dreaming of "next year." He was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish in Peosta and a member of its Rosary Society, a member of the Farley Knights of Columbus-Council 2001 and a member of the Centralia AmVets Post 13. Fred was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a loyal friend. His sense of humor and easy- going, down-to-earth personality won the hearts of all who knew him. He will be remembered as a caring, humble, gentle man known for his kindness and integrity. His faith and belief in Jesus Christ our Savior was his guiding light. He will be truly missed by the family he loved so much. Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Virginia McGovern, of Overland Park; eight children, Michael McGovern, of Dubuque, Debra (Svend) Jakobsen, of Rock Island, Ill., Kathryn (Rick) Hoffmann, of Dubuque, Brian McGovern, of Napa, Calif., Amy (Russ) Smith, of Wentzville, Mo., Rebecca (Bruce) Smith, of Overland Park, Daniel (Lisa) McGovern, of Cedar Rapids, and Beth (Matt) Panther, of Olathe, Kan.; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Mark, Clem, Frank and John; and a sister, Mary McGovern.
