Middendorf, 96, Topeka, formerly of Fairview, died early Sunday morning, February 4, 1996, at a Delmar Gardens of Lenexa where she had been a resident the past three and one-half years. Mrs. Middendorf was born October 23, 1899, in Hiawatha, the daughter of Richard and Johanna Puvogel and the youngest of 10 children. In early infancy, she was received into God's covenant of grace through the washing of holy baptism. She received instruction in the world of God, confirmed her faith in the Triune God on April 5, 1914, as a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hiawatha. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Fairview since 1936 and its Dorcas Society. She married Emil E. Middendorf on November 16, 1921, at her parents' farm at Hiawatha. He died August 13, 1970. She lived in Hiawatha, Powhatten and Fairview before moving to Topeka in 1983. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Senior Citizens Club, both in Fairview. She was a very caring mother of 10 children and survivors include five daughters: Norma Barnett, Betty Twitchel and Shirley Faulwell, all of Overland Park, Ks., Ruth McDaniel of Topeka and Delores Lehmkuhl of Holton; two sons: Harlan Middendorf, and Melvin Middendorf, both of Topeka; 30 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Wilma White in 1987, Dorothy Wiehn in 1975, and a son, Walter Middendorf, in 1982. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, February 4, 1996, at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Trenton D. Christensen officiating. Special remarks were by Brian Barnett. Music was by organist, Virginia Pfrang. She also accompanied the congregational hymns "How Great Thou Art", "I'm But A Stranger Here", and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." Casketbearers were grandsons Brian Barnett, Ronald Frazier, Terry Middendorf, Robert Middendorf, David McDaniel, Randy Lehmkuhl and Andrew Faulwell. Interment was at the Hiawatha Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund and may be left in care of the funeral home. The Framke, Casselmann, Meek Funeral Home were in charge of the arrangements. Many of us here in Fairview were not privileged to know Mrs. Middendorf but many were. Those who knew her, knew her as a kind and generous wife, mother, grandmother, neighbor and friend. Her moving away from Fairview was not her choice but she understood. Fairview always had a place in her heart. Our sympathy goes to the family.
