The fire that gutted the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Lemke, Geneva, Friday morning and resulted in death to four members of the household, was apparently set by hot ashes or embers that had fallen into a small wood pile next to the wood burning stove when the catch box was cleaned that morning, according to an announcement made Monday by Fillmore County Attorney Dan Bryan. The fire, which began about 10:45 a.m., was mostly under control 45 minutes later, but by then It was too late for those inside the house. According to Fillmore County Sheriff Bill Burgess, the first person on the scene. The front door was locked when he arrived. He forced it open but smoke and flames were too intense for him to enter. He went to the back door, but the situation was even worse there as the fire had already eaten its way through the door. Killed in the fire were Mrs. Elmer Lemke, whose body was found in a bed on the first floor, Jason Karst, who was found in a crib, and Jeromie Lemke and Heather Schommer, who were found huddled in the northeast corner of the house where they probably sought refuge from the smoke and flames. All the victims apparently died of smoke inhalation. Five other members of the family were not at home at the time of the fire. Mr. Lemke was at work at the Reinke Manufacturing Co., Geneva, Sharon Schommer and Larry Karst were at work at the Reinke plant at Deshler, Danny Lemke was at school, Ronald Lemke, 25, had left the house shortly before the fire to go downtown. Ironically, two of the family members, killed in this fire, were seriously injured in a fire in the Schommer home in 1979. Following that fire Richard Schommer was convicted of arson and manslaughter. The 1979 fire resulted In the deaths of Sharon's sister, Charlotte Lemke, and a visitor in the, home, Elmer Crew, Illinois. Firemen from Geneva, Fairmont and Shickley fought the fire with temperature around the zero to five above mark. Four were killed by the fire. Frieda Lemke, 52, who In addition to her husband, Elmer, is survived by five sons: LeRoy of Hastings, Vincent of Jacksonville, N.C., Delbert of Deshler, Ronald of Geneva and Frank of Lincoln; two daughters, Sharon Schommer of Geneva and Ann Lemke, Lincoln; three grandchildren; six sisters, Mrs. Jim Barnes (Ronalda) of Whiting, Kan., Mrs. Harvey Gerstner (Dorothy) of Frankfort, Kan. Mrs. Gerald Ponton (Maxine) of Junction City, Kan., Mrs. Doyle Troudt (Maurine) of Hastings, Mrs. Burdette Brown (Marie) of Channing, Texas, and Mrs. George Lemke (Clarabell) of Superior; and four brothers, Elmer Marcotte of Hastings, Leo Marcotte of Goodland, Kan., Don Marcotte of Fillmore, Calif., and Bill Marcotte, Edgar. Jeromie Lemke, 5, is survived by his, mother, Sharon Schommer; father, Larry Karst; brother, Danny Lemke; grandfather, Elmer Lemke, Geneva; and great grand- mother, Anna Lemke, Superior, Heather Schommer, 2, is survived by her father, Richard Schommer, Lincoln, and mother, Sharon Schommer. Jason Karst, 8 months, is survived by his father, Larry Karst, and mother, Sharon Schommer. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the Megrue-Price Funeral Chapel in Superior With Father Frank Machovec officiating. Burials were in Evergreen Cemetery, Superior. Superior Express December 24, 1981. Frieda Nadine Lemke, one of 11 children of Fred and Nellie Bigbee Marcotte, was born Feb.22, 1929, at Formoso, Kan. She died Dec. 18 as the result of a fire at her home in Geneva, at the age of 52 years, 8 months and 28 days. Nov. 22, 1949, she was united in marriage to Elmer John Lemke, Superior. To this union eight children were born. Preceding her in death were her parents and one daughter, Charlotte Lemke and three grandchildren. Surviving are her husband, Elmer Lemke; LeRoy Lemke of Superior, Vincent Lemke of Jacksonville, N.C., Delbert Lemke of Deshler, Ronald Lemke of Geneva, Frank Lemke of Lincoln, Sharon Schommer of Geneva and Ann Lemke, Lincoln; six sisters, Mrs. Jim Barnes (Ronalda) of Whiting, Kan., Mrs. Harvey Gerstner (Dorothy) of Frankfort, Kan.,Mrs. Gerald Ponton (Maxine) of Junction City, Kan.,Mrs. Doyle Troudt (Maurine) of Hastings, Mrs. Burdette Brown (Marie) Of Channing, Texas, and Mrs. George Lemke (Clarabell), Superior; four brothers, Elmer Marcotte of Hastings, Leo Marcotte of Goodland, Kan., Don Marcotte of Fillmore, Calif., and Claude (Bill) Marcotte, Edgar; five grandchildren and many other relatives. Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 22, at 10:30 a.m., from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel with Father Frank Machovec officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery. Superior Express December 31, 1981.
