Description	:	Friedrich Johann Wilhelm Poppe, son of Peter and Dorothea nee' Sorge Poppe, was born September 23, 1887 on a farm at Kiowa, Nebr. He became a member of the Lutheran church through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on Oct. 2, 1887 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Kiowa. His early elementary and religious schooling was in the Deshler vicinity. He was confirmed on March 31, 1901 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Deshler. Read More	Friedrich Johann Wilhelm Poppe, son of Peter and Dorothea nee' Sorge Poppe, was born September 23, 1887 on a farm at Kiowa, Nebr. He became a member of the Lutheran church through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on Oct. 2, 1887 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Kiowa. His early elementary and religious schooling was in the Deshler vicinity. He was confirmed on March 31, 1901 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Deshler. The family moved to the Chester vicinity in the year of 1900. Fred spent most of his life here except for a short stay in Norton, Ks., and 15 years in the Byron area. He was engaged in farming. While in the Byron area he was united in marriage to Emma Peters on April 27, 1922. This union was blessed with six children: Luella, Mrs. Fred Kapperman; Bernice, Mrs. Herman Dutton; Alvin, Norman, all of Chester; Leora, Mrs. Clarence Grafelman of Hebron; and Willis of Chester. In 1969 he retired from farming and moved to Chester where he resided until the time of his death. His health failed five weeks ago when he entered St. Joseph Hospital in Concordia, Ks., where he passed away Sept. 15, 1974 at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 23 days. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Rudolph and Walter. Survivors include his wife, Emma; his six children; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Freitag of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Mrs. Doris Vorderstrasse of Dallas, Oregon. Funeral services were held Sept. 17th at St. John Lutheran Church in Chester with Pastor John Freitag officiating. Singers were Mrs. Arno Sell, Mrs. Reuben Schleifer, Mrs. Egbert Tietjen and Mrs. Wilbur Mussman, with Diane Dittbrenner the organist. Pall bearers were David Dutton, Daniel Poppe, Steven Poppe, Gregory Poppe, Edgar Berry and Jesse Jensen. Interment was in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart Funeral Service in charge of arrangements. Chester Herald, unknown date
