Sawyer Funeral Services Held Here Monday Pawnee community paid its last respects to George A. Sawyer on Monday, June 8, at funeral services held at the Methodist church. Mr. Sawyer, well known merchant, of Pawnee City, died at the Lincoln General hospital, Friday, June 8, following a long illness. Obituary George A. Sawyer, eldest son of John Bemis Sawyer, and Ann Eliza Karna Sawyer, was born in Pawnee City, April 30, 1882, and departed this life in Lincoln, Nebr., June 8, 1951, at the age of 60 years, 1 month, and 8 days, after more than a year of declining health, and almost constant suffering. When he was quite young, the family moved to a farm southwest of town, where they resided for a number of years, later returning to Pawnee City, but retaining their farm where George, as he grew older, following the precepts of his sturdy New England ancestry, continued to work during his vacations, and to acquire a sense of the nobility of labor, which never deserted him. During his high school days, preceeding his graduation in 1903, he was greatly interested, and took an active part in all school athletics, a passion which never waned, during his entire life. In April, 1904, the year following his graduation, he entered the employ of C. D. Robinson, and on Feb. 1, 1910, together with Fred H. Barclay, who had been with Mr. Robinson, formed a co-partnership, under the name of Sawyer, Barclay & Co. taking over the business, which had been established in 1897. These two young men assumed entire management of the enterprise, and within a few years, had retired the interests of their senior partners, and acquired complete ownership, of what has become one of Pawnee City's oldest firms, and this long-time partnership continued until it was broken by death. On Sept. 2, 1908. he was united in marriage to Lucy G. Van Horne, a classmate sweetheart, who survives him. There came to bless this union, five children, one of whom died in infancy, and George Hugh, an Ensign of the United States Navy, who died July 11, 1946, following a short illness, while serving his country in Chinese waters. In addition to his wife and companion of 43 years, he leaves to mourn his passing, two sons, Lt. Col. Ted I. of Washington, D. C., and J. Tom, of Pawnee City, who is an associate in the partnership, and a daughter, Mrs. Jane Bickel, of Galveston, Texas; five grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Iva Hare and Mrs. Imo Uhl, of Pawnee City and two brothers in California, Frank of Newport Beach, and John, of Long Beach; numerous nephews and nieces, and a host of friends and acquaintances. One sister, Mrs. Florence Uhl, of Smith Center, Kans, preceded him in death. George Sawyer was deeply devoted to his family. He was intensely interested in all phases of his community's life, and felt it both his privilege and duty, to contribute time, energy, and money to its civic, religious and fraternal activities. In what he felt was his obligation. as a good citizen, he had served as a member of both the School Board, and the City Council. He was a charter member of the Service Club, and as such, had given personal and financial support, from the initial, to the final successful effort to secure a modern hospital for Pawnee county. At the time of his death, he was a member of the board of Directors, and vice president of the Pawnee County Hospital, and it was his fondest desire to see its completion and operation, for the good of humanity in his home community. He was an active member of the various Masonic bodies and by his council and advice, contributed much to their successful operation. In religious affairs, he was a longtime member of the Methodist church, and was never too busy to lend a helping hand to its affairs, having served many years as a Trustee, and having a constant interest in the improvement of the physical plant, to which he devoted much time and effort, in addition to liberal financial support. Thus passes a son of the pioneers: They laid the foundations for a community of high ideals and aspirations; he faithfully contributed of himself and his means to their extension, and now that his work is finished, other hands must grasp the fallen torch and carry on. Funeral service was held Monday afternoon at the Methodist church, Rev. W. N. Wallis officiating. Burial was in the Pawnee City cemetery. (Pawnee Library, book of obits in the Pawnee Republican.)
