Read More	Highland Recorder September 4, 1925 PROMINENT CITIZEN DEAD Charles T. Bird, prominent citizen of the Valley Center neighborhood, died Wednesday morning & while his life was despaired of some time ago the sad announcement was received with deep regret whenever he was known. Mr. Bird had been in failing health for some time, twice seeking relief at the University hospital. On this second trip there only two weeks ago the fatal character of his malady was made known and the most that could be hoped for was that he might reach his home before the end came a wish fondly expressed by Mr. Bird himself. This was accomplished & he was permitted to spend the closing days of his life amid familiar scenes & surrounded by his loved ones. Mr. Bird was a good man. When this can be truly said of any man, there can be no stronger encomium pronounced & of him it was true in every relation of life as husband, father, neighbor, citizen, churchman. Mr. Bird was converted under the ministry of Rev. S.S. Ryder in early boyhood & had been an officer in the church practically all the time since then. He was reserved in all worldly matters but bold & fearless in the service of his master. He was a Steward in the M. E. church South at the time of his death. He was born in the year 1855, a son of G. H. and Matilda Bird; married to Malissa Matheny, August, 18, 1877. He is survived by his widow and four children: Cecil & Given Bird and Mrs. Clyde Herold, of Valley Center & Kenneth Bird of Tennessee. Mrs. S.R. Sneed, Clarence, Clinton and Charles are four that have gone before. To these he referred only last Sunday as “waiting on the other side.” Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at Rehoboth, his pastor, Rev. F.B. Wyand, in charge, assisted by Rev, J. H. Mawhinney. Interment in Matheny cemetery. Matheny's notes provided birth & death dates. Highland Recorder February 6, 1897 A Serious and Perhaps, Fatal Accident A messenger was sent here Wednesday evening, in great haste, for Dr. K. H. Trimble to go to see Mr. Charles T. Bird, who it was said, was lying at the point of death, at his home on Little Back Creek. His serious condition is the result of an accident which occurred Monday. Mr. Bird and his brother, David, on Monday morning loaded up two or three large walnut logs to take them to the Hot Springs depot for shipment. Chas. was on the wagon driving, and his brother was walking behind. They had gone but a short distance from the former’s home when they came to an icy place in the road, over which the wagon and horses slipped down to the bottom of a steep embankment. In going down, the wagon turned partly over and Charles was caught by the logs, the heaviest weight being across his bowels and hips. His brother ran to his assistance, but soon found that he could not remove the load. The nearest help that could be had was a half mile distant, and the unfortunate man had to lay pinioned to the ground by this immense weight until help could be summoned from that quarter. Staunton Spectator & Vindicator February 11, 1897 Chas. T. Bird, who lives on Little Back Creek, was hauling walnut longs to Hot Springs last week when the wagon slipped off the road on account of the ice and partially turned over catching Mr. Bird and seriously injuring him. Before he could be released his brother David, who was with him, had to go half a mile for help. His injuries are internal.
