Lawson Was Merchant There For Many Years Funeral Services Were Largely Attended The whole community was saddened when news of the sudden death of Mr. George C. Lawson was made known Monday. One of the old heads of Asbury, where he owned and managed a general store for great many years, Mr. Lawson died, evidently of a heart attack, a short time after he had opened his store for business Monday morning, and the news of his death spread rapidly over the city and suburbs. He was 85 years of age. With the passing another of the fast vanishing country storekeepers has gone to his reward. Mr. Lawson, like so many others in the community, early in life had a nickname, "Swiny" tacked to him, and his tore was more often referred to as "Swiny's" than by its proper name. For a great many years the store was a popular gathering place for residents of the suburbs of which it was a center. There questions of all kinds were brought up, argued with spirit and vigor, and at times with acrimony, plain speaking was the rule, and it mattered not whether it was the nation's foreign policy or something that concerned local matters, expressions of opinions were frank and at times, of considerable importance. Mr. Lawson was a man who enjoyed the respect and liking of everyone. He was a sturdy type of man, independent, with a big heart, and he had extended a helping hand many and many a time to his neighbors and friends. He and his good wife had reared a fine family of girls, who were taught the tenets of the Christian religion from birth and whose charm and grace were reflections of those characteristics in their parents. A solid, substantial member of the community, whose good nature made him a friend of those with whom he came into contact, and whose business acumen made him a success as a merchant, he set an example in his home life, his business and religions life, well worthy of emulation. It can be said of him with truth that he was of the finest type of American manhood. His funeral was held in his home in Asbury yesterday, Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by the pastor of Asbury Church, Rev, J. T. Rowlenson, and attended by a large member of relatives and friends. Interment was in the family plot in Asbury cemetery. Pallbearers were members of the Adult Bible Class of Asbury Methodist Church. The unusually large number, beauty and variety of floral pies sent to honor his memory attested to the general esteem and regard in which he was held by relatives and friends alike. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Sallie Lawson, and five daughters, Mrs. Rome Barnes, of Asbury, Mrs. Leonard Wilson, of Philadelphia, Mrs. Alonzo Nelson, of Asbury, Mrs. Lloyd Byrd, of Chicago, and Mrs. Paul Maddrix, of Asbury. Two sisters, Mrs. Estella Sterling and Mrs. Julia Lawson, and six grandchildren, Cpl. Rome Barnes, of the U. S. Army, stationed in Mississippi, Mrs. Kathryn Tull, Miss Lillian Barnes, Miss Sallie Ann Barnes, Miss Janice Nelson, and Alonza Nelson, Jr., all of Asbury, also survive. Lawson, Aileen Lawson, Baby Boy Lawson, Erma Lawson, Gladys Lawson, Gertrude Lawson, and Lillian Lawson Mr. Lawson operated a country store in Lawsonia later operated by his son-in-law, Alonzo K. "Ducky" Nelson.
