Jerred, Early Settler of Gregory County, Passed Away Sunday George E. Jerred, one of the early settlers of Gregory county and a homesteader north of Gregory, passed away at his home north of Gregory, Sunday, after an illness of several weeks duration. The funeral services were held from the Methodist church in Gregory, Tuesday afternoon, Rev. L.R. Tagg in charge, and the remains were laid to rest in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. George Elias Jerred was born in Howard County, Iowa, January 16th, 1857. Here he grew to manhood and on Christmas Day, 1877 was married to Miss Mary Blanche Wells. To this union were born eight children, two of whom are living. In 1892 the family moved north of Bonesteel and soon after they had moved to their new home their six children died within nine days of each other of Dyptheria. A few years later, in 1901, his wife died, leaving him the care of two children. He later married Mrs. Kelley who passed away in the summer of 1925. On August 9th, 1927 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Marie Christensen, who survives him. When the west part of Gregory county opened to settlement he moved on a homestead north of Gregory which has since been his home. He always took an active part in community affairs, served both the school district and township in an official capacity, and was always ready to help a neighbor and aid in any worthy cause for community betterment. He was quiet and unassuming in his manner, yet firm in his beliefs, but charitable to all. His was a life well spent and he will be greatly missed by the community. His funeral was largely attended by old friends, neighbors, and relatives who had learned to love and admire him in his life and it was with deep sorrow that they came to pay their respects to his memory. He leaves to mourn his death, two children, Floyd C. of Gregory and Mrs. Gladys Kriege of White River, his widow, and four brothers.
