Jerred, one of the early homesteaders of this community, passed away last Saturday at Bonesteel, at the age of sixty-eight years, three months, twenty-six days, where he had been for medical treatment. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Methodist church, with Rev. Tagg delivering the services. The church was crowded with old time friends, neighbors, and re latives who gathered to pay homage to whom they had come to highly respect in this life as a leader in this community. Following the services at the church the remains were conveyed to the I.O.O.F. cemetery where they were laid to rest beside his wife who preceded in death. Josiah Arthur Jerred was born in Howard county, IA. May 19, 1861, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jerred, industrious and highly respected farmers. He spent his early life on the farm where he learned to share the responsibility of the farm and where he devoted a life long characteristic of true love for his work. He was united in marriage on August 28, 1880 to Miss Almira Thankful Wells and to this union 7 children were born, the eldest dying in infancy but the others living to enjoy his fatherly care and influence. Mr. and Mrs Jerred first made their home in southern Minnesota, where they lived until the fall of 1905, when they came to Gregory Co. and settled on a farm north of Gregory, which has since been the family home. As a mature man he was converted to the Christian life and with his family joined the church, ever after holding with sincere courage to the principles that caused the Jerred home to be the center of Christian interest in the community and his children to grow up to honor the faith of their father. Mr. Jerred enjoyed usual vigor and good health until the death of his beloved wife August 7, 1928, but since that time bravely fought a losing fight, although he was given the most thoughtful care and devotion from his children. But he was so lonely and passed away quietly. His passing takes from the community a man who had been active in the things that make for a better community. His home was a center for social and neighborhood gathering, and while he and his wife have passed to their reward, their influence for good will remain for years to come. He leaves to mourn his death six children: Merton W. of Millboro, Geneva M. Mann, of Woolsey, Fred J. of Rapid City, Alan R. of Custer, George B. and Worden F. both of Gregory, five brothers, 22 grandchildren, and a host of friends.
