Thomas H. is a minister ~~~~~~~~~~~ DEATH CALLS GEORGE MEE Old Settler Passes Away While Alone IN POOR HEALTH FOR YEARS Resided on "Spring Hill Farm" for Thirty-Five Years and Was Well Known George Mee, for thirty-five years a resident of Napa valley, has passed away. The end came either Saturday, night or Sunday at his home, Spring Hill Farm, near St. Helena, but as he was alone the exact time of his death cannot be given. Mr. Mee had been in poor health for fully fifteen years and he gradually grew weaker as the days passed by. Notwithstanding his feeble condition he refused to leave his home to live with any of his children, saying that he was able to take care of himself. Occasionally he would go to the home of his son James for a meal, but preferred to remain at home alone. Saturday he had J.O. Taplin, a neighbor, procure some meat, bread and other articles at town for him, and about 5 o'clock he went to Taplin Brothers' creamery for the packages, leaving there for home about 5:30. He complained of not feeling well, but as he frequently referred to his failing health, the remark did not occasion any uneasiness. Mr. Mee's home was about half a mile distant from the creamery and evidently when he reached there he felt worse, so placing his packages on a table, laid down on the bed with his clothes on and covered himself, probably expecting to be there a short time until he felt easier. Evidently he fell asleep and some time during the night passed from this life. It had been the practice of James and John Mee to either go or send someone to see about their father every day or two, but they did not feel so uneasy about him just at this particular time as there was a man farming the place and was working there during the days. Not hearing anything by Tuesday night, however, James Mee dispatched a workman, E.J. Daley, early Wednesday morning, to see if the father was all right. Not receiving any answer to his rapping Mr. Daley entered Mr. Mee's house and found the lifeless body lying in bed, the end having come without an evident struggle or pain and probably during sleep. Mr. Daley at once notified his employer, who telephoned to Coroner Brownlee. An inquest was held Wednesday about noon. The Coroner's jury was composed of F.W. Mielenz, foreman; C.C. Woolridge, H. Baubtits, A.F. Grigsby, W.H. Castner and John Kinyon. A verdict was rendered in accordance with the above fates, the cause of death being given as chronic heart and stomach trouble. George Mee was born in County Cavan, Ireland, April 1, 1847, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Mee. When but 4 years of age the subject of this sketch was brought by his parents to America, locating in Toronto, Canada. When a lad of 15 years deceased went to Quebec and there worked at various locations until he had earned sufficient money to come to California. The Fall of 1870 found George Mee in Sacramento engaged in the drayage business at which he prospered. In 1872 he married Miss Mary Coulter, who passed to her reward last January. On April 5, 1877, he purchased a farm on the East side of Napa valley and because of its location and abundance of water, named it Spring Hill Farm. For the past thirty-five years deceased has made his home on his farm, a place to which he was so strongly attached, that despite the importunities of his children, he refused to leave, preferring to spend his declining days alone rather than leave the farm so dear to him. The determination as shown in this one thing was one of the strongest characteristics of deceased and whatever contributed mostly to his happiness his children would not deny. Deceased is survived by one daughter and six sons—William E., Mrs. Hattie Ayers, George T., Thomas H., James G., Harry L. and John G. The funeral will take place from the Methodist church this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. W.C. Trudgeon will officiate and all of the children who could get here will be in attendance when their father's tenderly laid to rest. St. Helena Star, December 6, 1912 (Napa County, CA)
