FLETCHER George M. Fletcher was born in 1909 to Isaac Zenas and Lorena (Miser) Fletcher. He was born southwest of Pawnee City, and attended Fairview country school and graduated from Pawnee High School in 1927, where he enjoyed playing football. He graduated college from K-State University in 1931 with a degree in Agricultural and Animal Husbandry. Returning to Summerfield, Kansas area, he farmed and operated a filling station. It was here that he met and married Eleanor Gertrude Hood, a telephone operator in Summerfield, Kansas, on May 23, 1942. In October of that same year, he was called to duty in the United States Army. He served his country in Burma and India, returning home in October 1945, to his farming career. Three children were born to George and Gertrude, Janice in 1943, Marlyce in 1947, and Robert in 1950. George and Gertrude rented farm ground and lived in the Pleasant Valley vicinity. In 1952, they moved to the Fletcher home place near Pawnee City, which they later purchased. George worked very hard at his farming and was able to purchase two additional farms. Even with George's family being so demanding, he found time to devote to his children's 4-H activities. He organized and co-led the Little AKSARBEN 4-H Club. George was also a very active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Faith and Fellowship, AARP and Pawnee Historical Society, The Fletcher family changed their church membership to the Unitd Methodist Church at Pawnee City when the Pleasant Valley EUB Church closed. In 1978, George and Gertrude retired and moved in to Pawnee City. They enjoyed several bus tours to different parts of the country. George enjoyed giving his time and historical knowledge to the Pawnee City Historical Society. He was also famous for his "water witching". He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Nellie Geraldine and Mary Genevieve Fletcher; son-in-law, Richard Franklin Thieman; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Barbara Hood; brother-in-law LeRoy Hood. George is survived by his wife, Eleanor Gertrude of Pawnee City; daughters: Janice Lorene Thieman of Sidney, Iowa; Marlyce Ellen Morse of Tecumseh, Nebraska; son, Robert George Fletcher and wife Katharine of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sister, Alice Story Fletcher of Seal Beach, California; sister-in-law, Bertha Hood; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. George will be remembered by his family as a good husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He valued his many friendships and his motto was "Friends are the best collectibles." Services were held on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at the United Methodist Church, Pawnee City, Nebraska with Pastor Mark Crist officiating. Pallbearers were Richard L. Thieman, Chad R. Morse, Larry L. Thieman, Kendall Binder, Javan R, R. Fletcher, Troy R. Thieman and Jamin C. G. Fletcher. Honorary Pallbearers were Gerald Sunneberg, Harvey Schneider, Avery Graham, Joe Binder and Glenn Binder. Music was provided through the congregational singing "Hymn of Praise" and a duet by Robert and Katharine Fletcher accompanied by organist Shari Karjala with their selections including "He Touched Me" and "Amazing Grace."
