He was born February 13, 1918, in Lyons, Nebraska, the son of George William and Clara Bacon Shawver. George came to Montana with his parents at the age of six months. Read More	From funeral card - George Russell Shawver, 71, of Brusett, passed away Thursday, December 7, at the home of his son in Helena. He was born February 13, 1918, in Lyons, Nebraska, the son of George William and Clara Bacon Shawver. George came to Montana with his parents at the age of six months. He grew up on the family ranch west of Jordan and attended country schools. On June 29, 1938, he married Elva Marguerite Ryan in Winnett. They continued ranching in their home community until the time of his death. Besides ranch work George enjoyed hunting and breaking horses for neighbors. In 1949 George trusted the Lord Jesus Christ by believing the gospel message of John 3:16. He is remembered by his children and grandchildren for his songs, stories and his faith in the Lord which he enjoyed sharing with others. Survivors include his wife Marguerite of Brusett; two sons, George Harold of Brusett and Alvin James of Helena; two brothers, Ray Shawver of Brusett and Frank Shawver of Kansas City, Missouri; five sisters, Edith Moberly of Billings, Rose Lervick, Mary Billing, Clara Saylor and Jesse Stanton all of Brusett; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Family services will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. in Fairview Community Hall, with Alvin Shawver and Doug Crabb officiating. Burial will be in the Hearts at Peace Cemetery with Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Jordan in charge of the arrangements. * When a Cowboy Faces Death by George Shawver, Jr. My first memories are of my Dad singing of the brave heroes of the old time cattle drives. "Utah Carroll" - saving a little girl's life in a stampeded. "Billy Venero" - killed by Apaches riding to warn his sweetheart and her family of a midnight attack. "Empty Cot in the Bunkhouse" - Old Limpy saves a maverick calf from freezing in a blizzard. To face death is one thing when you're young and strong and it comes quickly. A flash flood, a winter blizzard, a bucking, squealing bronc headed down, down to the bottom of a washout. But what about when you're up in years and you haven't been feeling well, the phone rings with the doctor's report. The news is bad: fast moving cancer. "Time is limited." Dad didn't sing about dead heroes then, but about a Living Savior, of Hope in Heaven beyond the grave. He had believed the simple gospel message: John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but has everlasting life." In '49 Dad faced near death in a wreck with a horse. After that there was a change. He started preaching to the family - said the Lord Jesus meant everything to him. We hated it - wondered if he might be off in the head! But it was deeper than that. There was a change of the heart. Since then all of the immediate family and many others too, have come to know the Savior. Dad never attended big churches much, just met with other Christians, mostly in ranch houses for Bible study, breaking of bread, prayer and fellowship. About like the early church met. He was baptized in a lake years ago, but doesn't believe it saved him or is a ticket to heaven. He's met a few preachers, had high regards for some, but wouldn't call any of them "Reverend." Dad says he's not giving up - is going to visit the family, come back and see his cows. Just live one day at a time. He would tell you (that) facing death is sure a lot easier when you have an anchor, when you have a Friend that sticks closer than a brother, Prov. 18:24. *
