G.S. Skiles of Huntley Passed Away Sunday. George S. Skiles, one of Harlan county's earliest pioneers, as well as one of the oldest, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.H. Teaford, northeast of Alma, Sunday afternoon, April 12th. Mr. Skiles, ninety-two-year-old pioneer, homesteaded in the Huntley territory and had continued to make his home in that vicinity since. Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Teaford, Tuesday afternoon, at 2:00 o'clock, and burial was made in the Republican City cemetery. George Shelton Skiles, son of William and Sarah Skiles, was born February 27, 1850, in Schuyler County, Illinois, and passed away at his homestead, where he had lived, except for twenty-eight and one-half years spent at his home in Huntley, and one and one-half years with his daughters. His age at the time of his death was 92 years, 1 month and 14 days. He was a member of the Union Baptist church at Salem, and was a good, true, faithful and conscientious Christian. His Christian influence will be long remembered by those who associated with him. He came to Harlan County, Nebraska, in 1875, and returned to Illinois, where he was married to Lucinda Schroder, March 23, 1876. Moving back to Harlan County, Nebraska, February 1, 1878, when they settled on the homestead where he was living at the time of his death. To this union were born seven children, two of whom died in infancy, and Fred, who passed away April 8, 1923. He leaves to mourn his death, four daughters, Mrs. William Porter, Mrs. J.E. Smith, Mrs. F.W.N. Brown, all of Huntley, and Mrs. W.H. Teaford, of Republican City; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Melle Skiles of Huntley; twenty-one grandchildren; one brother, besides other relatives, a host of friends and neighbors.
