Description	:	Lillie Maria Porter, eldest daughter of George and Lucinda Skiles, was born on Feb. 23, 1879, north of Republican City in Harlan County, Nebr. She departed this life on Sept. 16, 1972, at the Phelps County Memorial Hospital at the age of 93 years, 6 months, and 23 days. On Feb. 12, 1902, she was united in marriage to William David Porter. She departed this life on Sept. 16, 1972, at the Phelps County Memorial Hospital at the age of 93 years, 6 months, and 23 days. On Feb. 12, 1902, she was united in marriage to William David Porter. To this union six children were born. She is survived by five of their children; Margie, Everett, and Mrs. Floyd (Helen) Kaup and husband all of Holdrege; Mrs. Florence Howsden of Hastings, and Lester and wife of Vacaville, Calif.; and son-in-law Dick McConnell of Holdrege. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Teaford and Mrs. Ola Brown, both of Holdrege, besides many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Fred and a brother who died in infancy; two sisters, Maggie May and Sadie; her husband, who died in 1942, and her oldest daughter Cecil, who died in 1960. Mrs. Porter was a long-time member of the Huntley Methodist Church. She was a true pioneer, having been born in a dugout on the family homestead and residing most of her life on farms in the Republican City-Huntley area. Four years ago she moved to Holdrege where she resided until her death. Services were held Monday, Sept. 18, 1972, from the Zulauf-Banta Funeral Chapel in Alma with Rev. James K. Irwin officiating. Soloist was Mrs. Dale Guthrie accompanied by Mrs. Vincent Colgan. Casket bearers were grandsons and great-grandsons; La Vern McConnell, Dale McConnell, William Howsden, Vincent Colgan, James Colgan and Michael Colgan. Interment was in Bainbridge Cemetery with Zulauf-Banta Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The following is a poem she liked which was read at her husband's funeral: "A precious one from us is gone, A voice we loved is stilled; A place is vacant in our home, which never can be filled. God in his wisdom has recalled, The one his love has given; And though the body molders here, The soul is safe in Heaven."
