Description	:	George Skokan, son of Louis and Bessie Skokan, was born August 21, 1913, at Verdigre, Nebraska. He attended rural school in District 88, and was graduated from Niobrara High School. After graduation he worked in various occupations as farm hand, bulk tank driver and manager of the Farmers Union Store in Niobrara from 1941 to 1944. On May 15, 1938, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Soucek of Verdigre, and to this union were born three sons and one daughter. He served with the United States Navy until 1946, and then was employed by Spelts... Read More	George Skokan, son of Louis and Bessie Skokan, was born August 21, 1913, at Verdigre, Nebraska. He attended rural school in District 88, and was graduated from Niobrara High School. After graduation he worked in various occupations as farm hand, bulk tank driver and manager of the Farmers Union Store in Niobrara from 1941 to 1944. On May 15, 1938, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Soucek of Verdigre, and to this union were born three sons and one daughter. He served with the United States Navy until 1946, and then was employed by Spelts Lumber Company in Niobrara until 1954. He was then elected, and subsequently re-elected, as County Assessor in Center, Nebraska. He served as Postmaster in Niobrara from 1961 until his death. George was a member of the Lutheran Church, serving two terms in the Church council. He was very civic mined and belonged to many organizations. He was a member of the Z.C.B.J. Lodge and past president and presently serving on the Board of Trustees. He was presently Commander of the American Legion and a member of the V.F.W. He was a member of the Niobrara Fire Department, having served as chief several times, and was presently secretary of the Niobrara Community Club. He was also a member of the Village Council and a Mayor of Niobrara. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite at Yankton, South Dakota. His father Louis, mother Bessie and sister Nora preceded George in death. He is survived by his widow, Evelyn, sons, Dennis of Bonesteel, George Arden presently in the Armed Forces in Fort Eustis, Virginia, Kenneth of Niobrara and daughter, Mary Ann of Niobrara. Brothers: Edward L. of Omaha, Nebraska, Emil N. of Seattle, Washington, Louis of Niobrara, William of Fort Worth, Texas, Frank of Niobrara, and Otto R. of Lakeland, Florida.
